Allegheny1600
It's probably not the most helpful comment to you but I reckon on that basis that you've definitely not got the right answer for 13 across. So it's not just me then! Thank goodness, now I can work on my alternative theories! On second thoughts, I'll just go back to the Lunester Lounge and discuss particle physics! John E. RMweb Premium JDW Posted March 17, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 17, 2015 Phew... I always get frustrated with crosswords, especially if I manage to do quite well to start with then get stuck with just a few left... so I'm glad its not a modern image prize, or I'd feel compelled to have a go! RMweb Premium Gwiwer Posted March 18, 2015 RMweb Premium Share Posted March 18, 2015 And I thought clearing all the numbers in the "Combine" was tricky!
Porcy Mane
16 Across. I know were it is... but what has a Council HQ got to do with a Loco Number. Even the Hornby part number doesn't fit!!! 13 Across. Even using his alternate titles makes this a bit of a chew. 1 Down. Could there be two answers to this? Both fit. Three, maybe four... to go. Andy Y
16 Across. I know were it is... but what has a Council HQ got to do with a Loco Number. Nothing really but the obvious building to use isn't that distinctive.

Andy Y
Well that seemed to be quite a tough one for everyone and I know a lot of hard work trying to track down something close to the right answers was put in by all participants. Even if you didn't complete the puzzle I hope it was entertaining at least. Right so here are the correct answers: Across: 2 98009 Prince of Wales (TOPS no. for VoR No.9) 4 45641 Sandwich 6 2796 Spearmint 8 6026 King John 10 70051 Firth of Forth 12 10 Tryfan 13 98713 Oliver Cromwell (TOPS number for 70013) 14 21C155 Fighter Pilot 15 6220 Coronation 16 30925 Cheltenham 19 58005 Ironbridge Power Station 21 3973 (formerly 08805) Concorde 22 4465 Guillemot Down 1 5520 or 5400 Llandudno 3 91110 Battle of Britain Memorial Flight 5 5080 Defiant 6 221 122 Doctor Who 7 4067 or 5087 Tintern Abbey 9 61306 Mayflower 10 7928 Wolf Hall 11 391132 City of Birmingham 17 50043 Eagle 18 45543 Home Guard 20 1677 or 1671 Thor It took until Friday night until a 100% complete entry came in (an honourable mention to Ramrig, The Stationmaster and Norwenglish who did very well) and there was only the one completely correct solution offered and that was Porcy Mane whose submission below shows the answers in full. Well done! Image removed
Peter Kazmierczak
Congratulations to Porcy Mane. Bl---- TOPS numbers for steam locos........... Grrrrrrrrr...... And well done Andy for such a thought-provoking quiz. Never did find a loco called Reuben Sandwich though.....
RMweb Gold DaveF Posted March 22, 2015 RMweb Gold Share Posted March 22, 2015 I got quite a lot of the names, but not the right numbers to go with them! It was very enjoyable even though I didn't get far enough to submit an entry. David
Porcy Mane
Blimming Heck... I wasn't expecting that. Must admit to not knowing that class 98 tops numbers for preserved loco's didn't exist until last week. Mr Google to thank for finding that out for me and it had me scratching my chin & looking skywards for a good long while. Kept me out of mischief for a few hours though. Now were did I put that Great Western track plan.... Thanks' Porcy Edit: Hang on a mo. I haven't' won. 17 Down? 50043 eagle. I had 60023. "Golden Eagle" and had typoed on Cheltenham. Time for a draw. Andy Y
Sorry guys! I'd been pre-occupied with the other side of the puzzle! Thank you to Mr Mane though. On that basis the winner will be Ramrig with one incorrect answer.
