Jessy1692's bits & pieces- Coaching stock and wagon bashing stuff with the odd loco

Recommended Posts

Right then, so following from DHP1 whilst i wait for news from Narrow Planet on the custom plates, iv gone back to the projects i started before i got carried away with claytons & saws.

I got a very very tatty Bachmann 37 off ebay for about 30 quid, was in all over green but covered in some horrible brown sludge. a good bit of model strip and some Shawplan bits and its now nearly finished in Blue, just adding the last few coats of yellow to the ends, tonight i managed to squeeze the Shawplan fan into the Bachmann housing and screw it back in, looks pretty good and im always amazed at the quality of the extreme etchings.

Along with the 37 is a slowly progressing Deltic, iv got a bit of a thing for super detailing deltics and this will be my 4th which has various bits of Shawplan etchings on, the Bachmann model isnt too bad but could be a lot better. It was bought as a patch painted Nimbus re numbered as 55 006 with plates, i managed to get it for 35 quid at Pontefract show as it was in a bad way, there was some kind of varnish on it that was tacky and it was covereed in fluff. It was wiped down in meths and modelstripped but it didnt shift easily but eventually i managed to shift it to get it back to a bare shell. Various bits have been added, windscreens exhaust ports and sandbox covers were carefully melted in with a soldering iron as well. Tonight was the first bit of work iv done it in months, mainly sanding down some lumps on the body and fitting the Shawplan bufferbeam assembly to the chassis:

Thanks John well spotted its my golden arrow GT3 i did a long time ago ill post a couple of pics if you like?

That would be very interesting to see.

Your Lima/ Railroad 20's look very good, particularly with the moulded long handrail being replaced with a proper one. Do these have replacement roof and side grilles as well?

John.

Cheers John ill take some pics tonight when im back at my dads of GT3, both 20s have roof fans in and 20 024 has etched rad grills in, tbh i dont know if the etched radiators make much difference, the body moulding come up pretty well with a bit of weathering.

Cheers for looking

Yes, the old Lima 20 still makes for a nice model, given a bit of modelling. Wire handrails, door handles, pipework, Gibson drain cocks, flush-glazing, etc.

The basic shape is right and arguably some of the finer detail is better rendered than the more recent Bachmann moulding.

Only 1 serious flaw - the bonnet side detail from the front end of the radiator grille back to the cab is 4mm too far aft - so the panel in front of the rad grille is too long while that in front of the cab is too short (as anyone who's ever tried putting a green livery totem in there will know only too well)

I still have a couple of Lima 20s from when they are the only* option, detailed up. Nowadays they run as dummies with a Bachmann mate - am toying with putting a big bass-reflex speaker in the empty bonnet of a Lima one, through wired to the noisemaker in it's Bachmann running mate.

*yes, I know the Dublo/Wrenn one is doable, as Monty Wells showed to good effect back in the 80s, but there's a whole bunch more stuff to correct over the more plentiful Lima one.

Only thing i would query on your 20024 is the bonnet-side arrows? I'm pretty certain that 024 went to scrap with a cabside arrow (it was one of the first ones to go in 1977) - indeed I've never seen a pic of a 20 with the arrow on the bonnet doors?

Think you have caught me out there! i did 024 a long while ago and i thought to myself the other night is the arrow correct and assumed id seen a pic somewhere and modelled it. Think a trawl through some books tonight is in order and a correct arrow added, also thanks for the info on the bonnet detail being incorrect will bear that in mind if i do a green 1.

Plenty of space in them bonnets should get some decent noise coming from one if you wire them up, im saving up for a paul chetter 08 chip for my class 13 which ill through wire with a big bass speaker in the unpowered master unit.

John.

Here you go John, Golden Arrow kit running on a Hornby railroad black 5 chassis, i managed to get one on Ians (macgeordie on rmweb) detailing etches which if i recall has the exhaust fins on the bonnet top and the radiator grilles which were a big improvement over the resin ones, window frames and other bits. Im not sure if he still does them, i got the last of a batch and was incomplete just missing the GT3 number plates but was very grateful to get it it sets off the model a treat. I sprayed it with railmatch dark rust and the transfers came with the etch from Ian. Only thing i never got round to doing was to make some beefed up coupling rods, the Hornby ones look a bit slender.

Cheers

James - a cracking job on GT3 and the etches really do make all the difference. Your shade of brown looks pretty good as well - there are a few colour pics but of course you never know how accurate these are depending on film type, processing and printing, and this looks just right on balance. Thanks for posting.

Well after a liitle while iv got some more bits done, still waiting on the custom plates from Narrow Planet for DHP1, artwork signed off so im guessing they are off to be etched fingers crossed they wont be too much longer.

The 37 is just about complete paint wise as of tonight just awaiting transfers putting on and varnish after, been a long slog but nearly there.

post-5804-0-07292000-1441232424_thumb.jpg

Iv also been demolishing my elderly DJH 02, it was bought many years ago second hand from Wakefield Model Shop in a horrible paint scheme, I stripped it and painted it but as time has gone on it was looking a bit shabby, so out came the stripper and stripped back to bare metal. The chassis always sounded a bit like a cement mixer so I thought id strip it all down and rebuild it to see if I could get it to run a bit quieter, a full strip and a clean I thought would do it.....but no I think I shorted the motor when I rebuilt it and tested it the other day and now the mashima is a bit dead.....time to put an order in for a new one.....

post-5804-0-28171000-1441232426_thumb.jpg

Body wise its looking good iv added wire handrails and bent up and fitted the veranda rails and also added the conduits between the lights and added new brake pipes, very please with it so far just need to get a coat of primer on to see whats what whenever the weather allows.

Finally a quick snap of my Dads Heljan 14 with its buffer beam filled in an a bit of weathering added. This has been a bit of pain of a loco, bought second hand as british steel one from Doncaster show it did a couple of laps and expired in a puff of smoke, whilst I was doing DHP1 we noticed the motors in the clayton & 14 were the same size apart, an order to Howes was put in and Dad managed to remove a flywheel and add the worm from the original 14 motor, all was well so we discarded the melted PCB from the 14 and hardwired the motor in, we lost the lights but at least its running again!

post-5804-0-85419900-1441232437_thumb.jpg

EDIT, since my last post iv had to strip my laptop back to factory settings after a blue screen of death, I can upload pics fine but cant insert them into the text (add to post) any ideas??

2nd EDIT, it seems to work with google chrome but not IE 11??? how queer!

Evening all, well the day has finally arrived and i have now finished off DHP1!

The plates arrived from Narrow Planet yesterday as well as a few bits for the 02 so tonight Iv finished off DHP1 and took a few pics. I think they finish it off very nicely. Also the 37 i was working is now finished and running around. The 02 is in the paint shops and the chassis is being rebuilt with a new motor which is sounding a lot better than its original open frame one.

More updates on the 02 soon and i may even get going with the Deltic from earlier in the thread again soon.

I picked up a secondhand copy of Railways Illustrated May 2015 yesterday. It includes an article on DHP1.

Good article if its the one im thinking of, lots of detail in there about the life of DHP1 and some previously unpublished pics

Right then things are about done for DHP1 now, i have asked the good people at Narrow Planet to etch me some plates so hopefully all being well they will be on the model in 4-6 weeks. Over the weekend i have put the transfers on and varnished it with Humbrol satin spray which gives a great finish i recommend any one to try it. The numbers on the side were made up from cutting various bits off D's & E's and the top of the P is a bit of  a 9 moved around, its the stuff to give you square eyes lining it all up. Iv had it running round this evening with a train and it is running almost silently, certainly etter than what it was running like when it was a Clayton. Its parked up on fuel shed at the mo,

Anyway thats about it for now, ill post some pics of what im getting back on with thats been sidelined whilst i have been working on DHP1, hopefully next time you see it ill have the plates on

Well after a few months im back to it, most of Nov was taken up with decorating and then before you know it Christmas gets in the way of everything.

Anyway, the 02 finally went back together with a new mashima motor and a flywheel and was painted at some point in Nov, im pretty please with the result, even if it still does sound a bit tractorish. The Deltic is still in primer as i cant spray it in this weather....

For Xmas i got an original Baby Deltic so that has quickly been dirtied up a little, its a bit early for my usual period but iv always liked these things and at the price they are now im sorely tempted to have another!

Also another new arrival was a two tone DP2 which means i can finally retire my Lima/A1 stretched deltic conversion, iv got a plan for this after seeing some pics after the Thirsk derailment so once i start on it ill post some pics.

That's about it for now, hopefully get some more things on here soon.

With the weather still being rubbish i havnt got any further with the deltic im on with, so for something to do i decided to strip down my RT models Harrogate Gas Works Drewry shunter running on a Farish 08 chassis. By the looks of it i completed it about four years ago but iv increasingly been unhappy with its running and also the colour and some aspects of the model (my own errors when originally built)

Heres what i started with:

post-5804-0-32871700-1455999802.jpg

post-5804-0-39863500-1455999806.jpg

post-5804-0-69499500-1455999809.jpg

First hing i had to change was my home made radiator grille, just doesnt look right compared to photos, not sure what i made it out of but it was time for it to go! Next niggle was the cab roof/sides, im not sure what happened when i built it but they didnt end up square and looks a bit wonky/bent, it wasnt enything to do with the RT Models casting, i vaguely recall doing something wrong on the original build.

Finally the colour, the blue was described as 'Circassian Blue' or something like that and described as a royal blue, the colour i used originally was a mix of acrylic paint i did as a bit of an experiment as i normally favour enamel paint, never have been really happy with the colour so it was time to come off as iv asked Rail Tech for some custom transfers for this and the RT models Pecket.

So after a couple of days in a bath of dettol, ( a tip from my brother who uses it to strip his games workshop stuff) i was left with a nicely stripped model back to bare metal. The dettol seemed to have weakened the original araldite & super glue so the model was broken back down to component parts and given a good wash in meths to remove any traces of old paint etc.

post-5804-0-19260700-1456000608_thumb.jpg

Very easy to put back together but befoe i did i drilled and cut out the cast radiator grille so i could put in a new brass mesh one, looking on RT models site i think the kit comes with a mesh grill now and etched steps. The body went back together quickly but this time i made sure to check everything was square, especially the cab sides/end

post-5804-0-97566700-1456000750_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-16512200-1456000756_thumb.jpg

After adding the bonnet grab rails, out came the filler, i think what had gone wrong before was id been a bit over zealous with the file around the cab area and also distorted the cast roof so a lot of time was spent filling and sanding these areas to get a good smooth curved transition from cabside to roof.

post-5804-0-36818600-1456000904_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-72249500-1456000908_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-88094500-1456000919_thumb.jpg

The next challenge was sorting the window frames now, the RT models kit ahs the top frame of the window moulded on the underside of the roof, now i think when i first built id removed them thinking the were surplus to requirement...... so these had to be remade. A trick i used on DHP1 to make the window frames was used again, i cut a thin slice of thin plasticard to make my own strip, handily it curved itself to almost the right radius! a small notch was filed into the top of the white metal frame and the strip superglued in, once dry it was glued to the other side giving a nace even curve and then trimmed once dry. Once id finished there was a gap betrween the top of window fram and the roof line so i put a thin spread of pva on the inside in the same way you use crystal clear for windows. Once dry a quick blow over with primer showed the glue plan had worked, was pretty please that it had worked so easily!

post-5804-0-21405100-1456001019_thumb.jpg

Next up was checking over and smoothing any lumps and bumps and adding various details, new rainstrips were bent up from wire and glued on and a new rad grille was cut from some spare mesh i had, big improvement:

post-5804-0-27213900-1456001462_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-94763000-1456001466_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-59459100-1456001483_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-96100900-1456001490_thumb.jpg

All was looking good body wise so now it was time to get the chassis running as well as my Pecket, first up was attaching the whitemetal sideframes to the body again and trying to line them up as square as possible. The Farish 08 chassis was modified with and extra axle for the jackshaft as per the RT models kit, this ran fine by itself, if a bit sloppy so i shimmed out the jackshaft drive axle and it ran very well, however when the body was dropped on it was terrible!

After a trip to the Doncaster show last week, i came back with a circle of N gauge setrack for the princely sum of 1.50 so set to work making a test oval fro my 009 stock (the 009 on the layout is very small so not ideal for testing) So i reasoned the cranked axles were striking the cast sideframes so much filing and tinkering with the axle slots started until i had the thing running as i expect it should, i also had to bend them in slightly but its barely noticable. Final check was to see if it would still fit through the tunnel and thankfully it did, you can see why the Harrogate Gas Works locos were built with escape hatches in the back of the cabs!

post-5804-0-71726800-1456001498_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-48166100-1456001800_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-87115500-1456001794_thumb.jpg

After that the painting started and is still on going so whilst its drying i thought id try building up the fly cranks so they all look like the jackshaft one, after a bit of head scratching i drilled a load of 2,5 mm holes in some plasticard and then cut out a square with the hole in the centre and then trimmed down so it would sit ontop of the Farish cranks and leaves a square top, they were glued on very carefully with superglue and painted red to match the rods.

I think it makes a big difference to them model, making it look less like an 08 chassis.

Evening all, so after a bit of a chilly trip to the East Lancs Diesel gala i did a bit more work on the Drewry, finished the painting and then gave it a coat of gloss to protect the very matt paint and also in preparation for the transfers iv asked for. Once they are applied ill be spraying it satin, cant stand shiny gloss!

Anyway, heres a couple of pics from Bury and how the Drewry looks now

Im much happier with the colour and the shape of the cab now and i i think the beefed up cranks help to give it a bit more of an industrial look rather than 'N gauge 08' just waiting for transfers now likewise with the Peckett.

Spencer, the cut down WD Hunslet is complete so the Gas Works trio is now only missing its founder member to become the quartet, fingers crossed RT Models might have a release this year and the Narrow Planet etched hopper kits....... fingers crossed

Thanks for looking

Right then, after a bit of a break and a few days playing trains with an excellent APT E iv started another new project after picking up a couple of 04's pretty cheap off good old ebay.

They are old split chassis ones but run very well, infact one of them looks to be absolutely mint but that wont stop me chopping them about a bit. I bought a print of 2 04s back to back in Harrogate goods yard in 1967 and after a bit of digging realised these 2963/2964 were connected permantly for multiple working at York after transfer from Hammerton Street so i thought id have a bash at recreating from the Bachmann 04s.

Upon digging out pics and info i didnt quite realise how many detail variations there is in 04's & 03's so i decided id have to do a bit of surgery to get them looking a bit more like whats needed.

First job was to remove pretty much everything under the footplate except the sand boxes as the Bachmann 04's i have depicted the later build with 03 style cut out steps & air reservoir, earlier 04s have a solid footplate over the front steps and a smaller air tank behind much more 'delicate' looking steps.

post-5804-0-43949500-1459961228_thumb.jpg

post-5804-0-31742600-1459961232_thumb.jpg

Next was removing the horrible moulded handrails on the bonnets and also moving the little footstep up slightly on the chevroned end. The cab handrails arnt too bad so one side still has them but ill see how they look under primer when i get there, all the rest are Alan Gibson medium knobs with his wire i picked up at York

I had a think about the footplate gap and thought about filling it but after an idea i had at the York show i got some etched checker plate from A1 models to add and bend over the footplate to look that bit more prototypical, i had to leave a bit where the cab sits sown otherwise it wouldnt seat properly.

post-5804-0-42060600-1459961253_thumb.jpg

Thats about it for now but ill get a bit more done this week and all being well once this one is done the next will be a doddle....

Cheers

Hi James,

That's looking an interesting project, nice to see you're keeping up the good work!

I do rather like your NG stuff too, especially seeing as it's industrial looking rather than "quaint "

What is the black steam loco, please?

Cheers,

John

The NG Harrogate Gas Works loco's were very big and 'industrial' i went to go see Barber & the Pecket up at the South Tynedale Railway when Barber returned to steam and was amazed by the sheer size of the things, the Pecket is basically a standard gauge loco on smaller wheels its very bulky.

The black loco is Spencer, a rebuilt WW1 WD Hunslet, its a langley kit that i altered, new cab and cut down chimney and a few other bits to make it like the Harrogate one. Its on a minitrix chassis but remotored with a Mashima, it runs really well but dont tell any one its only got valve gear on one side...

The real one wasnt a success, just not powerful enough to pull the loads for the Gas Works so there is only one known pic of it out there.

Heres a link to my blog posts on it:

If you fancy reading up on the Harrogate Gas Works NG line theres a very good book out there or just drop me a PM and ill give you some more info.

Ta for looking in
