coombe junction - 37142...Part I...

Update - Work started this evening on converting the Bachfar 37238 into 37142. This will have a black headcode as relevant to my era and 37207 will have the yellow headcode.

The decision has been made to omit couplings completely one end on in favour of buffer beam detailing, with a DG on the other end and as much detail as can be worked around it without compromising operations.

To begin with the NEM(?)pocket was removed and a small rectangle of plasticard was laid over the end to allow the bogies to continue to be removable. The jumper socket has been added together with a few hoses. One from Bachfar as supplied and the other from the Dapol accessory pack, after some plastic had been removed and a new hole formed. A Dapol screw coupling has also been added. I may need to remove some of these to pick out the relevant bits in red, yellow and orange etc, so not all have been glued in place.

Next up will be renumbering (any suggestions on how to remove the existing graphics numbers would be welcome)and the additions of the handrails to the front end noses.

I really need to get an airbrush as I cannot buy or indeed get any Railmatch paints here in Spain...nor do the car shops seem to have good colour match aerosols for BR Blue and also the warning yellow looks too plastic like.

Weathering etc will also await the arrival of an airbrush.

Anyway...it's my first attempt at detailing a loco, a few pics are attached of the first phase of the work.

Pete

Pete,

Looking good so far!

I've used 'T-cut' to remove the numbers on a Farish loco before, with good results.

Mask fairly tightly around the area you want to remove the number from (I used Tamiya masking tape). Apply the T-cut using a blunted cocktail stick, and gently rub away at the number, checking frequently to make sure that you're not taking too much paint off (or not enough). The T-cut also gives a nice glossy surface for the replacement numbers.

Hope this helps

Andy

Andy - Thanks - Yes it does...I might have a problem finding T-Cut here though. I used a 'Boots' nail remover varnish wipe on my LL 37 for Kyle and it reacted badly with the plastic...the Tamiya tape I should be able to find though.

Shane - Thanks - 37142 was a regular on the clays, featuring in quite a few photos on the Moorswater trains. It would have been nice to do 37207 in Cornish Railways livery as William Cooksworthy...however that's a year or two beyond my era, so it will have to be plain old 37207...

Pete, well, that's coming on nicely. I imagine that getting the pipes in at that scale is a little fiddly... good result. I'm afraid I'd state that I use T-cut too... not sure about alternatives, but did notice it on sale in Tesco last month - small tube not Wilkinsons bigger bottle that I'd got a few weeks earlier:blink:

As for colour, the bach offerings in Blue are that colour plastic so don't need painting, just varnishing afterwards to blend in any shiny bits that you might not want.

Good luck painting those pipes. I look forward to future posts. Keep up all the good work

B Rgds... Jon

Jon - Thanks - yep, those pipes took me a long time and every third attempt meant trying to find them on the floor.

Will try and raid a Tescos for T-Cut when I return for the Expo...will have to careful at Gatwick though - last visit back with KIAB, they took both pairs of my pliers, tweezers and scalpel handles/blades from my hand luggage + binned them...

Pete... anything considered sharp (as you list) is possibly subject to confiscation. Might be best to take a small bag to check in with those bits - or don't take them - get cheap ones on arrival. Difficult sometimes to see the line between what actually provides additional security and what's just a nuisance... approach is - to be seen to be doing something. Don't mix safety and security... they're not the same.

Enjoy the expo... and hope the journey's ok.

Jon - thanks - actually it was completely my fault I lost the tools - I knew from previous trips to Gatwick they were pretty strict having lost paints, shaving gel etc etc so I had placed all my tools together in our suitcase which we checked in on our outbound journey. After the exhibition closed, I packed KIAB + my tools straight in the hand luggage...and forgot to swap them...Doh!

Another costly mistake...tools now replaced with Spanish equivalents!

Back on topic, I hope to do a bit more on 37142 this evening...
