4 - Kyle - Hang the DG...Hang the DG...

Posted by bcnPete , 11 May 2010 · 812 views

Update - Yikes...4 days...and not even that...as I will finish working late Thursday and fly to UK on Friday...

After a disastrous end to last week, things have been progressing again. All weekend I was assembling DG couplings. I must have folded about 62 pairs as I wanted to put on all the rolling stock so as to reduce the fixed rakes and allow a few adhoc shunting ops.

Bending the wire hoops was very tedious and the swear box was topped up again after this but I gave up bending all the hoops as it was soul destroying seeing all the brass components laid out on the cutting mat - I am now fixing a few a day to ease the pain.

Coping stone added to top of wall now, platforms have been redone using a plasticard strip for the edge and 'wet n dry' for the surface which I quite like the matt textured finish.

Also overlaid some dark grey plastic sheet to the front fascias for the graphics.

Few pics attached...

More detail added to ramp, platform and bridge

Fitting the DG's - the N rolling stock already looks better with 2FS wheels and no rapidos...

Going well are you fitting full DG at both ends?
Nick - Thanks - Locos one end only (I will turn them in the fiddle) and if time, pipes and ploughs on the front ends. Wagons will have both ends (although I might just try with one loop if time runs out) and Coaches at both ends or perhaps a Dapol knuckle between rakes.

I have done a quick test with my Heath Robinson permanent magnet system and it seems to work okay - I guess after 6.5 hours of continuous operation on Saturday, I will know the layout a bit better.
Looks good Pete - looking forward to seeing it on Saturday.

Jon - Thanks - Come and say hello - lets hope my hand luggage is not confiscated...the X-Ray is going to show a suspect package with chaotic wiring linked to a small control box with a dial and a switch....
Hello Pete Posted Image

The couplings look so much better than the standard N gauge ones. I would suggest though that maybe you chemically blacken them. It really makes a difference and hides them even more.

How did you fix the couplings to the engines? I am assuming the one in the middle has one of those standard pockets (is it NEM?). I would be interested to know.

The track looks great once ballasted.

Hi Missy,

Thanks for your comments - I will try to chemically blacken them - probably should have done so whilst they were still on the etch, but it is actually a pet hate of mine to see beautifully detailed rolling stock...with a bit of brass poking out the front - If I don't have time, then the black permanent marker pen will be making an appearance!

In terms of attaching, I am guessing the class 24 has the NEM but in any case I found it too high, so I hacked it off and have built up small squares of plasticard to the right level and just need to paint it black (I think the unpainted white plasticard is just visible in the photo) I recall that Ed S. from the 2FSA converted a NEM to a DG so it can be interchangable but I am not sure if that will work with the ploughs?

Hi Pete,

Edward described the fitting of DGs in an NEM socket here;

Hope the exhibition goes well!

Regards,

Andy
Andy - I managed to find it just after I replied to Missy. Having decided to go the 2FS route I was not to worried about swapping couplings on my stock so I decided to hack mine off. I did find it difficult on some of my 20 year old Farish/Peco wagons to remove the coupling pocket and realised whilst doing so, that the sooner I start to build some of my 2FS kits then that episode will be history.

Thanks for your good wishes re the exhibition.

Pete
