Virgin XC TSRB
Way back in 2006/7 I converted a Hornby mk3 buffet into a TSFB buffet for a Virgin XC rake, the conversion was fairly straight forward (I used the window frames from a set of Hurst Models etched sides glued into position). At the time I sprayed it into Virgin red, the first coat was a nightmare with really poor coverage, while the second peeled off with the masking. I then made a mess of the transfers (putting the stripes on too low) which caused further damage to the paint on removal.
Having decided that I will try and get my Virgin XC rake finished to give me a HST to play with on Brent, I have cracked out this project to finish off the missing coach. The first step was to touch up the areas where the paint had peeled off showing the washed out red underneath. After sanding down the affected area, I touched up the paint with a small brush and then reapplied the transfers (Fox), this time getting them in the right position. Time spent lining out steam locos has certainly made me more proficient with large transfers, and I made a much better job of the stripes this time. I also added Virgin XC logos (although I am still trying to confirm an accurate number before I can completely finish the transfers.) A quick coat of Halfords Satin varnish finished off the sides.
Once dry it was time to reglaze, the windows were added back to the original locations, with a little filing I was able to fit a Hornby window into the two new large frames. For the small window in the kitchen area I resized the original long window to half length. With the body now finished, the coach was reassembled and it is now ready to go with the rest of the rake
