Hi I have never made a model layout in my life but my Dad has been interested for more years than I've been in existence he is currently modelling Grimsby station and his previous layout of Hatton was featured in the 2005 September issue of Railway Modeller. I have been painting and modelling with wargaming miniature's since my late teens and after turning 40 in October I thought about starting a layout. I am now in the process of planning and building an N gauge layout of the Borden station and once it gets past the design stage, and my knowledge increases, am looking forward to getting involved in the forum.

Welcome aboard, Dan.

You do not have to wait until your knowledge increases to get involved in the forum!  Asking questions here is one very good way of accumulating knowledge.  As you will soon discover, our debates are very wide-ranging and not confined to prototype and model railways.

I couldn't agree more.

This might sound strange to some people, but another way of accumulating knowledge involves other people's questions - reading them (and other people's answers to them) - sometimes doing some reading up / web searching on them (because they might raise interesting issues) - occasionally even finding you are in a position to answer them yourself.

I am not saying this to apply pressure - far from it - but I've experienced this myself, both on good sites including this one and in my previous job as a lab technician in a university. (In case you are wondering, my job didn't just involve setting up lab classes. I often ran these classes myself - and supervised students doing practical work for their final year projects - a scary prospect indeed!)

One of the things about teaching people how to do things is that the people being taught might look at this stuff from a different angle (or might have seen similar stuff done in a different way) - and this might cause you to think about stuff in another way.

And, on that bombshell, it's probably time to move on.

Most of us aren't intimidating (even if some people like me have occasionally been described as "sinister"). Most of us don't mind answering questions. (To be honest, some of us would be quite happy if anyone found anything we're doing even remotely interesting - which reminds me that I've got to get back to those drawings on my PC.)

Please get involved around here - it would help make this site even better.

Regards,

Huw.
