Does anyone know when the ScR of BR started using red ballast?

It was certainly commonplace when I first visited the Region in the early 1980s. I believe it came from a couple of quarries, one of which was near Inverkeithing.

There are photos of Beattock in late steam days of 'Scottish pink' ballast from Cloburn quarry near Lanark so I understand that it was introduced around the mid sixties.

My driveway is the same stuff only smaller...

None of WJVA's pictures show any evidence of it in the 1960s, not even on the WCML - though I'd trust Dave Franks on this. 

 

I remember first being struck by its ubiquity in the 1980s.
