RMweb Gold Corbs Posted December 13, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted December 13, 2017 (edited) There is a facebook page (WW2 Radio) that has access to lots of photos from LIFE magazine in the 1940s. They posted an album of the USATC at work in France in 1944 which may be of interest. I don't think you have to be a member to see it, it's very interesting. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=ms.c.eJxFVFkORDEIutHE3Xr~%3Bi00epvSXAOLSmpiliWlUSbn~_bIEwdWvrvoB1z~%3BjkuYAPJOqU9EqMQIAhlNiAMUIPB3CKwEqUklSU9bhABSSZF~_gCQ4YAPLLpEWc92Ettc0mgz0pelQZwXhWFJK6pigDQIWBflXOcQC4gBLZ9JWACRiUBNKdDQDep3KTmmEfnTWqKYMohm2MeHUMGmguO0CwBGE211sPpkR8g50mwWxmjZJNKUjJbtgjIejBH4MZC741Zr2nQtPxj~_JMUJiYpBGoBJm1fD5Y9yFFzARecg3NzNuthTgZmWq~%3Bb0WU8ia8pkw5m6lyDF1ZZdufhbR~%3BDuH3vDSYMVrGMW8XPSpqS~_pqrSUoOztJ4MD5Y5bvkkPiq5FECDQ~_90cMEEicgCJZ9q4TOMpwS7MVsyLCVPAaqHA4ofBlcVOxnYLzTVDyPYLcpGGHwzaVhL1F3yImTquZ9ZGIvwV6y1tRoahhh8xxyP4PgZ5Bua3qB0pVwUSX4~_pwfSu08hPOoT2RV45QkPDQI1AJkxIGklUAscNuvzKicmX4S5GD0SiStYtJcBl929YARdx71zTNnktEPDsbl5mixZVBy0Evx~%3B~_i9MeON1WwVTr264fF6~_f7kD7gjbNvmmLQdq7Q0MnqB8wexN1RC.bps.a.2022519904660662.1073743032.1634742540105069&type=1 It shows the devastation they were dealing with, and the quick fixes for getting things moving again. Impressive stuff. Lots of S160s and S100s mixed with SNCF locos. Edited December 26, 2017 by Corbs
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted December 25, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 25, 2017 They posted a few more railway-related photo sets from the 1940s. This one, I think, is about soldiers learning about railroad operation in the USA in 1945.https://www.facebook.com/pg/Radio.WW2/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2025385604374092 Toledo, Peoria and Western Railway - 1947https://www.facebook.com/pg/Radio.WW2/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2024466701132649 This photo set from 1949 seems to be focusing on one railroad's conversion from steam to diesel power. A lot of the steam fleet is shown being scrapped.https://www.facebook.com/pg/Radio.WW2/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2023382434574409
RMweb Gold Corbs Posted December 26, 2017 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted December 26, 2017 More railway-related albums I dug out of their facebook page. RMweb Gold Corbs Posted January 2, 2018 Author RMweb Gold Share Posted January 2, 2018 Check this album out - the Southern Pacific assists with the war effort in 1942 https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=ms.c.eJxFVVGOBTEIutFGrFZ7~%3B4ttHkbmlyAiOh23g2OZdardXv75ADcsoisFZBSQcbDAOWT0FdA~%3BDSAWCLAkPmA0QhpxR~%3BRJw0ZUQNow5KMGwOd0ABfwjLNcF8C2523ba06gj4BkSdQCh~_PfTgGXDOy0N6bEtqQAllgv43K4g53l9i9kvLuidZyA2zKK499QSTU1vi73~%3BhiZa738~%3BRiea6ymS39dHheVLoZR1EvT1pm2Gq4ujZWAnsTsazuiT6J~_x4esT9v7tT0jig941Ogdv8IJyFjZZIoWkAOESoKiSr1QswZXYhPQ17Z5MG4KKIrAkUa~%3BiVDTJoahtsn7yA0ZXudXcmrHb2cXaA3tPsCK9uG00SWAPhAtIIcR0sjR2MT6cpWANGZaaNruQ0B59M9lo2q~%3Bhp5lV30ljDDOljxwt3Z3uGfcbajLs2HUx~_BpV8rp47JDt~%3B4wPvQYvJgSiHFqgA3ZZvtH2385JaYS5zmUb4SvmLrhqIR52A4HOH3kPmywNgK1DOP7Eb3vBzBn6XuWAGo0UoxiSbVEaV0XBGC6hLrUMEIMPn3Rn6hzL3iyHmMdMjZfQ5qMZY6GLcBH6SeyhztOS05RGIZ8FG8dIR81GrYaOAOEgDuJuYz9Yv9J1Lad7etXAL~%3BND2hvHV6c1sL~%3BAQeDUkE~-.bps.a.2031299693782683.1073743049.1634742540105069&type=1
Nearholmer
The jugoslav shot of children operating a railway fits with the common case of 'pioneer railways' in communist and former communist countries (my history is a bit wonky, so I'm not sure whether Jugoslavia was communist or not by 1948 Edit: checked, and it became communist in 1946). These are operated by groups that are a bit like the scouts or guides, but are learning to be railway personnel, rather than how to polish their woggles (my knowledge of scouting is limited). Until recently, children of c11-16 were entrusted with all sorts of jobs on these railways, up to and including signalling and driving, but I think that has been reined back a bit now, so that adults cover the 'safety critical' roles, and children the rest. Some have closed since westernisation, but by no means all. The lines are I think all either narrow gauge (600mm or 750mm) or miniature (381mm). If you google 'pioneerbahnen' you should get a lot of information about them, in multiple countries. Pity we never had them in the UK; I would have signed-up at about age 8. cctransuk
A hospital train in Britain, 1943 https://www.facebook.com/pg/Radio.WW2/photos/?tab=album&album_id=2006399552939364 It would appear that the loco has been allocated to GWR territory - judging from the lamp-irons. A former flat-mate, who moved to Hungary in the early 1980s, used to volunteer on one; his girl-friend was an official in the railway-workers' union, which may have had something to do with it.
