mattym1985
Hello All This new layout is going to be my first really attempt at making an exhibition standard layout. It is going to be set in North Yorkshire (suggestions on a name would be helpfully), based around a small village with a branchline terminus, The layout will be DCC and controlled via a gaugemaster prodigy advanced 2 with Megapoints for all the points and signals, with possibly getting the DCC module for Megapoints as well. The main station boards are going to be 3ft long by 2 ft wide, with the rest of the scenic boards 2 ft wide by 4ft long, the fiddle yard boards are going to be 4ft long by 1ft wide. The layout is going to be housed in my bedroom as i don't have any other space to build it. Here is a view of my track plan. I hope to start construction of the new layout in the next few weeks all the track has been ordered same with the wood to build the layout with, and i hope to have a weekly update on my progress in building the new layout. If i feel like i can do it, i will also be doing an update via youtube otherwise it will be just on here. Well wish me luck, i think i am going to need it. matty Edited March 31, 2018 by mattym1985

Lacathedrale
Is there a reason for that double-leaf fiddle yard?
tigerburnie
I might be tempted to have double track in the open country with the fiddle yards separate from each other and maybe a turntable in the station for some more working interest and opportunities? RMweb Gold The Johnster Posted February 15, 2018 RMweb Gold Share Posted February 15, 2018 Is there a reason for that double-leaf fiddle yard? I'd suggest that the limited space to run around trains at the terminus makes the double leaf a good use of space; 7 roads all of which can be accessed at any time, L. If I might make a suggestion to Mattym, I would want to space the fiddle yard roads out more so there is room between them to get at stock you want to lift off without disturbing it on the adjacent road. Or it may be better to have the longer fiddle yard boards as the station area, despite sacrificing some width and scenery. Good plan though; looking forward to hearing about progress. Name suggestion, given the Hornby controllers and Norse influence on town and village names in that part of the world, Horby!
Giz Puk
Hi Matty, look forward to seeing this project develop over the coming months and would highly recommend taking a look at the 'Little Muddle' thread for inspiration as this shows how a simple track plan can look stunning (Less is more as they say). One point I would consider changing however is the fiddle yard. I would be tempted to go 'Single Leaf' to provide long sidings for displaying/storing rolling stock not in use and this could even be modelled as a locomotive/carriage storage area or alternatively add a station halt or coal yard/goods area to give the branch a sense of purpose and somewhere for trains to go to rather than just disappearing under a bridge or tunnel. At the end of the day though... it's your layout... so develop it how you want and don't be tempted to be driven by what the current 'In thing' is. will you be limiting passenger services to 2 coaches or do you intend to incorporate an early 2 car DMU (as I think one of these weathered and with sound would sound Grand Grommit.) If its Yorkshire I expect there will be coal wagons somewhere.... and sheep!!!! but alas no cider or cows. Yours Aye, Giz

mattym1985
Update 30/03/18 Well having the easter bank holiday week off work has enabled me to get a fair bit done, all the baseboards are now complete, track has been laid and tested (all good so far), the servo's have been installed for the points and tested, and construction has been started on the 2 platforms. The platforms are the scalescenes kit built on a layer of 3 2mm think card bases Well back to it, will post another update when the platforms are completed regards matty
mattym1985
update 31/03/18 I have completed platform 2 and started construction of platform 1. I have also decided on a name for the layout, Scholes this is a small village on the outskirts of Leeds, west yorkshire, it has an old quarry near by, and i will be using that as a base for some of the good traffic going through the station, The station was on the old Leeds - Wetherby line, and was the second stop from Leeds station the first been Cross Gates station, it was originally a through station, but i have turn it into a terminus with the closure of the Leeds - wetherby line a few years earlier than in life. I will post a few photos of the completed platforms shortly. regards mattym1985

mattym1985
update 08/04/18 Well the platforms are now complete, just got to try and find a clear varnish from somewhere just to give them a coat to protect the paper, a goods shed from my old layout has been installed and the lights connected up, got to either put a wall or a fence round the platform edge. Start work on weathering the track, this will be a few stage process, stage 1 base coat sprayed on to track, stage 2 track ballasted, stage 3 sleeper grime applied to ballast, stage 4 rails weathered. work has also started on doing the road for the layout this will run along the front of the layout then go around the back of the station to a row of houses these will either be terrace houses or cottages ( i haven't decided on which yet) well i hope to have another update next weekend this time with a few pictures. regards mattym1985
