Wagon Compensation Units

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Anybody know of a supplier of brass 4mm scale w-irons that cater for the reduced space available on wagons with solebars slimmer than the normal 12" size ? A number of pre-1923 private owner and company wagons have solebars only 9 or 10" deep and there is not enough room for any of the w-irons I have tried. It occured to me it may be possible to make a new pivot arrangement for the rocking end as some of the pivots supplied leave a lot of movement and you shouldn't need that much to ensure good running.

Agreed.

I've just used the BB spring units in a NB brake van, which has solebars of just over 3mm in depth (presumably 10 inches). The only thing is, don't fold up the longitudinal strips as these have tabs on them that position the units for 12" solebars.

I got "6 RCH Wagon W Irons with Springing, 1907 Pattern (BWF001/4)".

On a typical, wood-frames wagon - 12" deep headstocks assumed - and where the floor sits on top of the headstocks,  0.5mm packing is needed to mount Bedford axleguard-units. If the headstock is 3" less tall and the buffers remain centred vertically in the headstock, then this would exactly eliminate that packing.
