Yorkshire Velocipede Day 2012

Recommended Posts

Today I went along to the first (hopefully of many) Yorkshire Velocipede Rally, despite crap weather and it being a weekday, 7 machines turned up, doing a run from Pickering to Levisham in the morning and doing some turns up and down Grosmont station in the afternoon. It was great fun to watch and at Grosmont they were even letting folks have a bit of a play, altogether a great day and the folks at the NYMR want a pat on the back for making it happen.

That is indeed a genuine bona fide parp parp warning instrument on the machine in question - apparently in use until 1982 with Norwegian State Railways as a track inspection vehicle.

The third and 4 photos from the top are track bikes, the third photo being a genuine GNR 1874 track bike from the Doncaster area, with the one below being a modern equivalent built for fun. These are propelled by a rocking motion and come with a foot or hand brake.

All the others bar the red contraption have a free wheel facility as you would find on any bike, the top two are ultra lightweight and have mountain bike gears, reaching the heady speed of 15mph!

The red contraption is an ex PW bogie converted by the NYMRs MPD into a velocipede and is about the heaviest thing there is, it has no free wheel and is direct drive with back-pedalling providing the braking.
