I'm very tempted by Hattons' £66 for the 2-car BR blue version; I note that it has 4 lights on the cab front (1 at roof level). Can DMU experts advise what years this version is appropriate to? I model up to the end of 1981.

I bought the blue 3-car set from Rails last week in their sale & it has the same 4-light ends, which I believe represent the original 1957 build; the version Farish make with two lights & a two-character headcode panel is the later 1958/9 build type. From a quick glance through a couple of books, it looks like the 4-light ends were still around in late 1980, but I suspect they largely disappeared in the refurbishment programme.

I've not really delved into the subject too deeply yet, but one thing I have noticed is that the Farish DMBS seems to be fitted with the later arrangement of guard's doors (the window on each side is at the corridor end, if you see what I mean), irrespective of end type, which I don't think is correct for the 4-light end. Also the numbers they've chosen don't actually match the details of the real vehicles, at least on the 3-car...

Thanks for that Pyewipe. It now looks like any resistance to temptation would be futile!

I have a 3 car blue one, the only issue I have with the lights is that unlike the 108 the lights are white and not yellow.  The white is a little bright but can be toned down with more sophisticated decoders.

Or if you're a DC user like me, removing the body and a little wash of thinned black paint also tones them down!

Best,

Alan

I think most of the 101s with four lights lost their extra two lights at refurbishment but obviously the odd one or two slipped through the net as I remember there were a couple of units working in the Edinburgh area in the mid 80s, still with four lights. Here are two shots on Flickr from 1983 (prototype for everything!): http://www.flickr.com/photos/30268259@N03/2863595498/ and 1984: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30268259@N03/2932558700/

Not sure when all over blue became extinct on 101s but there were probably a few still running round unrefurbished in 1981.

Hope that helps

Hi,

The seats in the 3 car are the un-refurbished colour, however the onboard rear lights indicate a refurbished set so the model is ambiguous in that regard.  Prior to refurbishment staff would just hang a light on the back like a loco hauled train. Unlike the 108, the 101 models have switches underneath to turn either the red or white lights - or both off with the destination board still lit. This is primarily for running 2 or more units together but it does give you more options if you want a specific look.

Has anyone tried using a transparent orange/yellow paint to change the light colour into a somewhat warmer tone? I recon a little orange wouldn't change the red light very much but would make the white look far more realistic. I might give it a try but perhaps anyone has a different solution?

You could try overcoating the LED with a little yellow or orange paint. I've done this with black to tone LEDs down a little on the 108s in particular and it works quite well and saves having to remove and replace LEDs (which you can always still do later if the paint doesn't work).

Cheers,

Alan

funny what you miss even after riding on them and looking at many pics

I have got one with 2 headlights anyway - the blue and grey version.

enjoy your new toy anyway when it arrives!
