batrapyr
Allan, Those images are stunning and you seem to have got the colour balance (in the sky) just right. Had I not been aware that these were models, crafted by your own fair hand, I think that I could be forgiven for thinking that they were real life images. I have been following your exploits for about a year, ever since my 1st grandson was born and my interest in railway modelling was rekindled, and your handiwork has truly been an inspiration. I love all the comments and responses but, most of all, I adore seeing the amazing images of the stunning models that you have created. When I finally get to start my own modelling I will aspire to your standards. Now, if only someone would start a topic on the subject of how to convince the domestic authorities that the front of the garage would make an ideal location for a model railway and that it would be a good idea if she removed all of the 'stuff' that she had dumped there... allan downes
Hello ! I seem to be slipping off the page and destined for the archives ! So, before that happens, here's a few more shopped pics to halt the slide into obscurity ! Allan
mullie
I slip off my own page quite regularly. Over the last few weeks I've done very little modelling but hopefully that will change this week.
RMweb Gold Tony Teague Posted August 24, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted August 24, 2017 Allan Not sure whether you need a prototype but if anyone ever doubts that your derelict goods sheds are realistic, here is a picture taken a week or so ago of the former LNWR goods shed at Watford, Northamptonshire (as in Watford Gap etc): Such a waste, and not long now before it falls down completely! allan downes
Hmm. Could be my next project, Tony. Thanks for the inspiration. Cheers. Allan.
Campaman
I passed that goods shed yesterday, I go that way to a garden centre at Wilton Locks and always have a look over at it, shame its rotting away. Another old goods shed will be disapearing shortly as the one at Market Harborough is to be demolished so they can build a new car park, it used to be our warehouse when I worked at Cavewood Transport when they had a depot in MH
allan downes
Here then, and moving in a completely different direction altogether, the goings on up in the Colorado mountains - American narrow gauge and the mining industry. Cheers. Allan However, this first picture is just a test as I've just got a new scanner and I'm not quite sure of the picture size and what's gonna happen ! Hmm. That seems fine so, on with the opera ! Edited August 29, 2017 by allan downes
allan downes
Here then be some more y'all and, there's plenty of em' ! Cheers. Allan Edited August 29, 2017 by allan downes
allan downes
Sorry about that, I pressed the wrong button in that last post so don't think y'all got away with it ! And more later ! Tried deleting a double picture there. Didn't work ! Edited August 29, 2017 by allan downes
allan downes
Another quick scanner test ,guys. Bear with me. Hmm. Could be interesting. It was scanned from a test sheet and not much bigger than a postage stamp. Brill scanner this is - a Canon MG5750 Pixma. See what I can do later. If only me ego would give me a break.... Cheers. brylonscamel
Oh lord! I haven't visited this thread in a while and I'm blown away (again) by the modelling here. Such inspirational projects - especially as I'm thinking about a small scale industrial project as an aside to 'Braeside'. I've picked a great location but I'm going to have to read up about old school 'town gasworks' before I start cutting any styrene -as I don't know how they work and what the buildings house! Thanks again (everyone) for posting their work. allan downes
Loaded with drugs, on a permanent high and doing cartwheels at every opportunity, cancer, after all, does appear to have an upside where I felt well enough to have a bit of a go at modelling again so, here's the outcome - a small country station and, who knows, keep on popping the pills and it could be the start of another micro layout ! Cheers. Allan
brylonscamel
Glad to hear your doing cartwheels again and putting our modelling standards to the test. I saw these photos and thought the property looked so good that I phoned my estate agent and asked if we could put in an offer ...

batrapyr
Keep popping those pills, Allan. I wish that I even felt like doing cart-wheels. Sadly the back pain is too great to even contemplate any form of acrobatics, just getting out of bed is a struggle! Frankly, your work is an inspiration and I am champing at the bit to get started on my layout. If only life didn't get in the way. Too many other commitments that need to be dropped so that I can 'crack on'. At least, now, I know what I want to model and, having viewed some of your work, I now realise that I am not going to build just a railway layout. I am going to set it in a landscape populated with buildings that 'look right'. My layout is unlikely to hit the exhibition circuit but I am certainly going to aim for exhibition standards of workmanship, because of you. Best regards, Barry
allan downes
You definitely have the right attitude, Barry, to build a really nice layout so don't let anything stop you - just do it and you have all my best wishes. allan downes
Railway Stable Block. These stables were quite a common site in most railway yards long before the internal combustion engine replaced horses yet you don't often see them modelled so I though I'd have a go where the design was totally freelance so therefor maybe not typical and just a wild interpretaion at best. Anyway, here it is and the results of a bottle of pills, a litre or so of something green and really vile taken four times a day with not the foggiest idea of what it's supposed to do and two days work. Cheers. Allan.
Branwell
Lovely work, Allan - I particularly like the cobbles, got that 'just been raining' look to them.
RMweb Gold teaky Posted November 19, 2017 RMweb Gold Share Posted November 19, 2017 Love it! Those recently rained on stones setts really add atmosphere and I can almost smell the pile of manure down the side.
RMweb Premium Sasquatch Posted November 19, 2017 RMweb Premium Share Posted November 19, 2017 Good to see you posting Allan. Not sure what drugs they're prescribing you but those last two structures are superb!Just how did you make those cobbles look so real? Personally I hate wet cobbles (due to an incident involving a Vespa in Gent) but want to model a "Reet grim mill towne tup north" on a rainy day. Regards Shaun
allan downes
Thanks Shaun. The cobbles are Wills painted over in either black or dark brown, wiped off whilst still wet, lightly sanded over the surface and finally dabbed over with Colron light oak wood dye which accounts for the sheen. Cheers. Allan.

allan downes
Coal Office and Sack Store. This is a simple little model with bags of character and at one time typical of most railway yards when coal was delivered by rail to the coal merchants who then delivered it to local households - I know, I did it for a week then got the sack for giving it away to old age pensioners, was fined a £100 which my girlfriend at the time paid because I was 20 years old, with a flat stomach, massive quiff, my own teeth and cute ! Anyway, now that it's the time of year when lawns look after themselves and weeds hibernate, you could build something like this comfortably in a week end. Cheers.
