oatmeal
Hi there I'm hoping to buy my son (nearly 5) an 00 gauge HST for Christmas. It's what he wants! I'd prefer to buy him the BR Blue or the swallow maybe, but I don't really know what the best option would be in terms of what to go for as there are so many on ebay. I can't stretch to the new range (like R3269?) - was there a BR Blue equivalent of the GNER R2116? If those Hornby train packs are the best route for a cheap but not really ancient option, I might not be too fussed in terms of what livery it is (S and J models have R2298A online for £65). Grateful of advice or being pointed in the direction of good web resources. I'm not someone who has any modelling skills, or knowledge!
delticman
Hello oatmeal, I would suggest posting this question in "Modelling Questions, Help and Tips" which should generate more response. In answer to your question I would suggest getting hold of one of Hornbys Railroad HSTs which utilises the older more accurate Lima body with an updated Hornby motor bogie, this gives quite smooth running from a budget loco. This may not be currently available but should be easily obtainable through Ebay. The model only comes in Virgin Trains red (I think it is R2707) but you can then pick up Lima bodies in the old Blue/Grey and Swallow liveries cheaply. Otherwise there is nothing wrong with your suggestion from S and J models which I think uses the old Hornby Ringfield motor which has stood the test of time at the hands of generations of children. Hope this is of use. Regards, Geoff.
