RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted February 16, 2010 RMweb Premium Share Posted February 16, 2010 I've been looking forward to the new Bachmann 08173 in weathered BR blue - the catalogue and website photos make the loco look really good, with black oil and grime over the lower body, frame and wheelsets. But unfortunately that's not what the actual model looks like...at least according to the photos on the Rails site where the con rods and lower body have an orangey colour which doesn't look correct at all. Does anyone know if this colouring is correct or has a chinese factory again not done what was expected? Bachmann and Hornby both seem to be affected at the moment. RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted February 16, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 16, 2010 I got mine today and i think it looks fantastic, hats off to Bachmann on this one! Interesting 67005, but does yours have the orange effect and is it prototypical. Personally I think not - to me at least it looks odd.
67005
I can sort of see what you mean regarding the orange, although i worked on 08's and it looks to me how it should. This is of course just my opinion though. Chris
Tom Bayford
Track dirt and underframe grime can all depend on where they have been used and how often its gets cleaned off some locos go more of a gray but ive noticed some diesels with an 'orangey colour'
Pennine MC
All I can really see is that the yellow rods are evident in the Rails shot, whereas in the Bachy website one they're almost obscured; the usual 'braked dust/earth' overspray may be contributing to a *slight* oranginess but nothing that twenty minutes with a paintbrush couldnt sort out. Factory weathering inevitably varies - if you want a bespoke job, then you pay bespoke prices...
RMweb Premium brushman47544 Posted February 16, 2010 Author RMweb Premium Share Posted February 16, 2010 Fair enough, and I certainly agree that weathering varies between individual models. But I was certainly hoping that Bachmann's weathing in this case would be based on black to look like oily dirt as shown in the picture on their website. It fits with marshalling yard and siding use rather than private sites where the load can be the cause of the weathering (stone, china clay etc.). In this case the weathering colour(s) have produced an orangely effect on the con rods and the lower body. Don't get me wrong I have no problem with the weathering if it is more or less prototypical. I look and decide whether to buy or not. But what I would like is for the final product to resemble the catalogue or website image. That is perfectly achievable. EDIT: Hattons have now uploaded an image of the actual loco at PO depot. The weathering looks more like the Bachmann website image than the actual model. C'est la vie! (The) Youth
Picture on hattons show its just a plain single colour weathering Not worth anymore than a pristine gronk imo
Pete Piszczek
Not worth anymore than a pristine gronk imo That's basically been my opinion of just about every factory weathering job. Anything more than just a light spray below the solebar, and the time it takes to do it right is more time than they are willing to spend...
gwrman
Hi, does anyone think the big streak of black, down the side from a sealed panel is over done, also any hints on how to tone it down. I've blackened around the exhaust and made the cranks look oilly on mine, also why is the 08 the only Bachmann loco that does not come with a detailing pack. At least they've got the 8 in 08173 right. Nigel.
Paul W
The overall look of the "Gronk" is good, but as always with a "one pass" factory weathering it is too even in colour and shade, but as already stated not too difficult to improve on. The one aspect that realy annoys me about the Bachmann 08 is the over sized plastic handrails, why oh why can't these be finer and made from brass or other? It is slightly annoying to puchase one of these and then spend 3-4 hours changing these handrails. Other than that, it looks good, just hope it runs a bit better than the original releases at slow speed. Does anyone know if it's wheelsets are compensated this time?, here's hoping.
