TRACTION issue 228 is published on Friday 5th June 2015. The contents are shown below.

Colin Boocock asks a question that no doubt many railway travellers have asked over the years, ‘IS THERE A LAVATORY ON THIS TRAIN?’ The article covers the group of electric multiple units that the Southern Railway and the Southern Region used on semi-fast services.

Like many photographers Gavin Morrison didn’t travel very often to the east coast port of Hull to take photographs of trains, but he was lured there to take photos of ‘Deltics’. We see some of the results in ‘EAST TO HULL’ and they are not all of the East Coast racehorses.

Andrew James has looked at the performance of the early diesel locomotive pioneers and discusses their contribution to the development of diesel motive power in ‘LMS 10000: THE DADDY OF THEM ALL’.

This issue’s ‘overseas’ contribution heads west to the Irish Republic with Glen Batten recalling the days, not that long ago, when Irish Rail’s services were almost completely provided by locomotive hauled services. Knowing that the changeover to DMU operations was on the horizon, he visited the Emerald Isle in 2006 and recounts his experiences in ‘THE IRISH ROVER’.

Mick Humphrys returns with more tales of his life as a driver, this time working out of Paddington in ‘EUSTON’S WESTERN ADVANCE’. This was the period when Virgin Trains operated Cross Country as well as West Coast. His fascinating article reveals just what a complex operation this was.

Back in December 1970 I spent a day watching trains at Chesterfield. It was a busy location for both passenger and freight trains (and of course still is). When I received Bill Jamieson’s latest contribution ‘CLASSIC TRACTION AROUND CHESTERFIELD 1971’ it brought back many happy memories of those long gone days. To do this feature justice it is being split into two parts. The first, about his visit in July 1971, is in this issue, with the second part covering September 1971 following in TRACTION 229.

Geoff Gillham’s photographic contribution features passenger train locomotive haulage ‘WEST FROM SALISBURY’.

For all fans of diesel shunters Peter Hall has written a follow up to his previous article about BR’s small shunting locomotives in TRACTION 224. This time he looks in detail at ‘THE EASTERN REGION CLASS 03s OF THE MID 1970s’.

In this issue’s TRACTION MODELLING Rob Owst looks at building ‘MOTORAIL CARFLATS IN 4MM SCALE’. It’s a relatively easy project and opens up all sorts of operating scenarios such as operating Motorail trains or block freight trains delivering new cars. Modellers in N Gauge will be pleased to know that there will be an article about modelling these vehicles in TRACTION 229.

The layout this month is somewhat unusual as it is the ‘FAMOUS TRAINS’ exhibition layout, which is located in a park in Derby and is open to the public. Based on Chinley station in Derbyshire the layout is mainly a steam era layout, although the real station saw diesel operation with Metrovick Co-Bos, ‘Peaks’, Brush and Sulzer Type 2s from the late 1950s onwards. Colin Boocock, who is one of the masterminds behind the layout, arranged for diesel operation on the day the photographs were taken.
