About this blog

Updates and thoughts on my 00 gauge model of Devizes Goods Yard, and the rolling stock used on it. The layout is to be set in the late 1930s and focuses on the Up goods yard.

Devizes was the major station on a single track line from Patney and Chirton (on the line from Reading to Westbury) and Holt Junction (on the line between Trowbridge and Chippenham). With three platforms, Devizes was served by a variety of trains including autotrains, semi-fasts from Paddington, and both local and through freight trains. The line was upgraded to take Red engines in 1938, apparently in preparation for war.

I wanted to make my own GWR open wagons as I felt I could do it more cheaply than buying RTR stock. Using Dapol wheels bought from Hattons at 85p/axle and 25g (roughly) of PLA at £21.99/kg gives a cost per wagon of under £2.50 - at that price you'll have a fairly limited choice of fairly low-quality models, so why not make you
