Are they shows or are they shopping malls?

I often go to model shows, despite my wife`s raised eyebrows, my main interest being to get ideas and generally be inspired by the layouts displayed. Lately layouts seem to be taking a backseat to trade stands. At the recent Wells show it was proudly announced that there would be 12 layouts and 19 trade stands!! I am all for some trade support, and often buy from these stands, but trade stands seem to taking over. I realise that it helps with the cost of putting on the show but when there are fewer layouts than trade stands I`m beginning to lose interest. Oh and don`t get me started on the rucksack gang!!

Hello 8752,

I don't go to many exhibitions - mostly because of time constraints and money issues, but I make sure that I get to RailWells. This is specifically because it routinely has a high percentage of "must see" layouts, and is accompanied by an excellent cross-section of trade support. This is because it is not just a high quality model railway exhibition, but also has the additional component of Scalefour South West merged within it. So I know it's going to get good trade support, which makes it even more attractive for me.

I agree about the rucksack thing. It can be a pain, but I think people just forget they have them on. I carry a squashed-up placky bag in my pocket; my wonga runs out long before the bag is full :) It's when you see people persevering with the demands of the Town Hall architecture on crutches and in powered scooters, you appreciate that you've got it easier than some... and then there's those youthful types who are height-challenged.... Railwells is one of the only times I am thankful for my height :)

I welcome decent trade support at a good show, balanced with quality layouts. Railwells ticked those boxes for me again this year and I'm only sorry I could not have spent longer there: mine was a flying visit sort of on the way home from holiday. For me the balance of trade stands between box shifters and more specialist retailers is important and Wells is one of many shows that gets it right IMHO. Inevitably others see it differently and how sad it would be if we were all the same!

I possess a rucksack which I sling over one shoulder. It is much better in the humid conditions for which Wells Town Hall is renowned than wearing a jacket! I do not wear my "mobile home" on my back since I find it difficult to access in that position, not being an octopus. It is also much more difficult to clout someone that way.

Regrettably with the demise of "model" shops, exhibitions are the ONLY place you can get to see products before you buy. I choose exhibitions based on the traders that are there, rather than the layouts. Railwells is not a trade show (like Scaleforum, ExpoEM), but it's still a good show.

I completely agree with Tim. Living in London, its basically impossible to get to a "real" model shop (the Engine Shed way out in Leytonstone is the only exception). Traders are really the primary attraction for most exhibitions for me!
