Bachmann EMU running probs

blog-0741019001345223945.jpgHi I wonder if anyone else has had poor running downhill with the Bachmann CEP & EPB? They stop-start their way down a 1 in 40 gradient, and Bachmann acknowledges the problem saying I need a feedback controller! All my other stock including Bachmann and Hornby run perfectly downhill on both a 50-year old H&M Duette and a Morley Vector. Anyone else know anything please or better still, has found an answer. Thanks and good luck. Brunel

It's a curious one that. The only thing that might cause it, in my opinion, is the way the motor coach chassis is constructed; as the drive is only on one bogie with a very large lump of diecast behind it, and no motored trailing bogie, the inertia of the weight, plus the flywheel might cause the motor bogie to slip slightly followed by the unit regaining traction, then slipping, then getting traction and so on. I think the motor coach would have avoided this by having two powered bogies and the weight situated in the middle of the coach instead of up front, thus equalising the above forces by providing more traction and grip. However, the model would suffer even more from the daylight in the passenger compartment issue with a chunk of metal blocking the daylight!

I'll have to watch out for this when running my 2EPB on the clubs layout once we've finished the wiring as there's plenty of gradiants.

I seem to have found a solution to this. A friend of mine has one and we ended up fitting some foam under a single axle on the trailing car. A bit of fiddling to find the right size and no more surging. The friction seems to provide enough dampening, without locking up the axle.

It was tested on a long gradient & no hint of surging, previously it surged on both DC & DCC, the latter had tests done by modifying the CV's made little noticeable difference.

I'm going to his place tonight, so will give an update.

Added later.

No problems at all tonight.
