Heworth Sidings - Update - 24/09/2012

Hi,

Saturday was a meeting day for the Yorkshire Area Group of the N gauge Society, so a good few of the build team were found together in the same place along with a full complement of modules for the layout.

Our attention at the moment is squarely on the End Loops, having successfully test fit all the modules together a few weeks back. Currently we are wiring and preparing the boards for track laying, which in our case means laying a 1/16" cork track bed. We have chosen to 'super elevate' the track on the loops and we intend to raise the outside rail of each curve by 1mm, to give a fairly prototypical 6" difference in height between the two rails. Here is a track plan for the End Loops, with the other end being a mirror of this.

This was also the first time our other group members had seen the layout in its full size and with the Fiddle Yard and Scenic Boards operational, so it was nice to be able to share it with them.

Also a short video taken while some 'testing' took place on the Scenic Boards.

We have some work parties arranged for Wednesday / Thursday this week, so hopefully another update in a few days.

Cheers, Mark.

Looks great with the flowing curves, I am building a 15ft long layout in N solo so I appreciate how much work msut have gone in to this even for a club.

Indeed, it has yaken our group (6 of us), just over a year to get this far. Although, it's really now where the hard work starts with the scenics ;-)

How far into your build are you?

Hi Mark,

All track down and half the point motors installed and wired but with 48 points its turning in to mammoth task! Since you guys are using Digitrax did you consider accessory decoders with loconet for feedback?

Hi Andrew,

To be honest, we didn't give feedback much of a thought, as we only intend to operate them via the Command Station, by Throttle or using something like a JMRI Panel. This should allow the Accessory Decoders to keep track of them, once they have been operated once or initialised.

We have also split the layout into Power Districts, with a dedicated PD for the Accessory Decoders, which all things being equal should never short and shut down, so reardless of what's happening on the layout (short wise), we will be able to switch points and reliably know what state they are in.

The main factor though was cost, Accessory Decoders are expensive bit's of kit on top of the motors and points required, so in the end we decided to use the MERG Accessory Decoders. These operate 4 solenoid or slow action point motors and come as a kit for assembly. As one of our members has the skills, he made them up for us. They are around

Like the Class 56 with was it 36x HAAs, typical Aire Valley coal train. Looks like a really great and huge layout in the making :-)
