Weavers Yard - a Conundrum Resolved

blog-0136573001349819905.jpgAs mentioned in the previous entry, I was having a problem regarding the layout of the area at 'X'. A very useful visit to the Farnham Museum gave access to the 11934 25" - 1 mile O.S. map -

This showed that '7a' West Street - seen to the left of the yard entrance in this view -

actually had a trapezoid plan.

Another 'site visit' (just down the road!) showed that the roof has various elements - a flat roof serving a roof-light over the main shop, with a 'catslide roof' (one that nearly reaches the ground) on it's west side and a hipped roof running to the south. The glazed atrium is of course a modern addition, but the delicate bayfronted window must have let in little light to the premises which in 1872 was occupied by a 'Miss Whiten' who ran a 'Berlin Wool & Fancy Repository' from the main shop.

More interestingly 'Piggott & Co' - a 'Dyers and Scourers' are also shown in occupation. I've a feeling that 'scouring' is a process allied to tanning - and considering that no 8 West Street (the area already constructed) was owned by 'Alwyns', a large butchers (!) I hope Miss Whiten had a fairly poor sense of smell!

All I have o do now is to model the various rooflines.... More later!

Hi Mikkel -

Thanks for a really interesting link (should have done that myself...). It allies to a project I did as an archaeologist where I was asked to identify an artifact found on a site in Wandsworth. Turned out it was a ceramic pot used for chemical dyes - and apparently a right smelly process it was too! So if Piggotts were making as well as using dyes Ms Whiten probably kept her doors & windows closed!

Anyway, the last update on the 'concept model' is about to go up!
