GWR Engine Drawings

Hi All

I have been having a look at the GWR Modelling site and want to turn a Hornby14xx into a 517 but the site suggests reference to a drawing to take my measurements from.

Can anyone suggest a source of engine drawings please- my book shelf does not contain such an item- carriages, road vehicles and wagons yes but engines no!

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Regards

Locomotives in Outline GWR, C.J.Freezer is a starter for modest money. Okay drawings, but not much else. It doesn't cover everything though and from memory I don't think the 517 is included. Russells Pictoral Record of Great Western Locomotives is a much larger volume with far more content, at a higher price, but a much better bet. There was a run of articles in GWRJ that covered 517s, almost certainly one of them was accompanied by drawings. There are online indices for the series that you can search to find the issue you need. Most specialist booksellers will be able to source back issues if the publisher (Wild Swan) is out of print.

I would urge anyone interested in GWR to get the J.H. Russell series Pictorial Record of Great Western Engines, as mentioned by richbrummitt. They are a fascinating read in their own right, a great aid to the modeller, and will probably inspire you on to further conversions. Yes, they are expensive, but that reflects how good they are, and you will not regret buying them. The 517 is in volume 1, (Gooch Armstrong and Dean).
