After the Quarry

Over the last couple of weeks the quarry has slowly taken shape ,interspersed with a few other projects that have been 'on the go'! The time-sheet hasn't worked out too well - mainly owing to a bad attack of 'man flu'!

The basic building blocks are rough-cut chunks of building insulation in various thicknesses

which are then covered with layers of bandage soaked in 'EasiFill' - a decorators plaster available form the usual outlets. At £18 for 5 kilos it certainly works out cheaper than model-making equivalents.... I mix it with water and add a good splash of decorators PVA. At one time we used to use decorators scrim but now appears to only be available as adhesive-backed, hence the 2" bandage material!

Slowly the quarry wall progressed along the board -

with further layers of 'EasiFill' being added to

a) hide the bandage fully and

provide detailing for the stratigraphy.

This has now been further accentuated by a very dilute wash of black acrylic -

I use the 'dark to light' technique in most of my modelling so that subsequent 'dry-brushing' of suitable acrylics will accentuate the shadows.

However, more of that next time!

Looking very effective. I too miss the old fashioned cotton scrim much more adaptable to iregular surfaces than the modern stuff. I am sure I got the last lot of easi-fill much cheaper from B&Q (I was buying so much  stuff I was asked if I wanted a trade card so I said yes).

Hi Ian, good progress, the visual effect of this is already very interesting!  I agree about the dark to light technique, it can be very effective. With your buildings in the foreground it will be very special. But now I'm repeating myself :-)
