First Track

blog-0775623001369087681.jpgFirst track is down and as you will see it is not on a traverser as intended. Couple of reasons for this; Firstly I realised that without some real mechanical engineering I would not be able to operate a traverser by myself from the other end. Secondly I had all the bits made up for a fourth standard baseboard so seemed silly not to use them. I will have to tackle a traverser for the steam end though. I could get away with plain sidings at the tractor end as most things will just go straight in and then back again(after having been unloaded but that is another story!) but the steam engines will have to run around their trains and possibly have the engine turned. I am thinking of making a traverser on my now standard 42inch board with a short 12 inch board tacked on the end with the run off tracks and a turntable which should give me enough length and flexibility. That would make it a scarey eighteen and a half feet which I can just fit in between conservatory and kitchen but will work on just one section at a time in my office (Ah! The joys of working from home!).

The other development if the three way point to save some space. Have chickened out a bit and fitted Peco point motors here as the wiring seemed a lot more straight forward (am using Fulgurex on rest of layout). Not sure this was such a good idea as now think I will need the double contact switch as I have an LED track indicator system on order along with a capacitor discharge unit. Quite how I am going to set the control panels up, as I want them identical at each end is another matter but suspect it will mean the purchase of a second unit and or an awful lot of wire.
