Points ready to go.

blog-0409030001369088749.jpgThree points ready to go.

One of the supposed advantages of the Peco points was that they are ready to go - Hmmmm..... Well I guess you could use them straight from the box but as I am placing such a high priority on good running I have followed the advice in Brian Lamberts excellent web site (http://www.brian-lambert.co.uk/ ). I am looking forward to the results but I have to admit to a bit of nervousness about hacking about perfectly good brand new points. Perhaps I am getting wise in my rapidly approaching old age but I did practice first on an old point which was a really good idea. Just like the test ballasting and dummy baseboards!

Another thing you may have noticed is that I have gone for using foam board as an underlay (thanks to my similarly born again railway modeling friend Andy for this one). I also considered camping mat as recommended by John Clutterbuck but found the foam board easier to stick flat. The track is then PVAed on and so far (24 hours!), seems to be OK! The real test will be how it copes with temperature vatiations as the finished layout will probably be stored in the unheated cellar.

With a bit of luck I will be laying track on the second board tomorrow.

Hi Kevin

I actually use a thin (about 2mm) foam bought bought many years years ago which I think was meant as an underlay for wooden flooring, but I know many use camping mat. I would also recommend Copydex glue as it remains flexible. It can be diluted also for blacklisting.

Humble apologies, I now realise that it is Dennis Harrison and his Towy Valley who uses the camping mat - too many Narrow Gauge and Industrial magazines melding into one. I do have some of that foam lurking in the garage but is a bit late for this project now.
