It's got legs!

blog-0710001001369090093.jpgAlthough I have some cheap B+Q trestles to use while working on the boards I wanted to get the design for the proper legs sorted. Took quite a lot of thought but just an afternoon in the end to do. I used 2x1 (which of course is nothing like!), which fitted neatly into the gap between the ply sandwich. The legs straddle the baseboard joint thus giving support to two boards in one go. I fear I have made the protruding tang to long but this is easily sorted out.

The big controversy however is how tall I have made them. Both wife and child say they are far too high at about four feet. Personally I think they are ideal and I am far from being any way tall! I have promised to make some trench periscopes for ease of viewing. I know this is a very sore subject but when it comes down to it there is just no way everybody can be accommodated - it is just impossible. I am afraid I am taking the view that this is my model and if you want one lower (or higher), then you can make your own!

Seriously though I do consider the presentation of the model to be very important indeed and I have some quite interesting ideas using some unusual materials.

If you have been following this rather rapid series of postings you will probably have realised that I have been playing catch up with what I have been doing over the last month or so. Well, I am there, I have caught up! What I am aiming to do is at least a little bit on either the layout or the stock everyday in order to meet my deadline. I certainly shall not be sorry when this wood working phase is out of the way though as really is not my forte!

Board supports are one of the areas I will need to address, so in the meantime I'm always keen to see what people are using. Is it stable if you "accidentally" lean against the board ?

I haven't been following this, but the whole thing looks about 2ft wide. In the central part I would worry about the front and back legs moving separately from each other ? At the ends, I worry that it might not be resistant to a front-to-back knock - there seems to be a lot of scope for the end legs to form a long lever on a narrow base. Hope I'm wrong, but best to ask at an early stage.

Hello Ken,

It is actually only 18 inches and the stability was a worry. It is actually not too bad but I do intend to make braces which will just drop over the pairs of legs to keep them a standard distance apart. I will then add a brace from the end legs to this. I did consider widening the track at the bottom but thought that bits sticking out would be just asking to be tripped over. If after all this I am still not happy then I can resort to some sand bags on the braces underneath.

At the end of the day though there is less than

I am planning to get my layout to be 1400mm at track level. Too high for some but for most viewers, it represents eye level looking into the scene. If you decide the height is wrong, you can always recycle the legs by cutting a bit off and adjusting the brace at the new length.

Glad you have it under control - it's not the cost of the wood that matters, it's the time and cost of building everything else on the layout.

Put some sand bags on extensions of the end braces, so that people stumble into the sandbag before they trip on the supports ?

Sandbags on outside is a good idea but hopefully people won't get too close because of the barbed wire. Oh, didn't I mention the wire? Not real of course but should be effective in keeping little (and big), fingers away.
