Sliders

blog-0845523001369259437.jpgMade a start today on the final board which I have been putting off as it involves a traverser which is something new for me. Have finally settled on using key board shelf runners from Homebase. These are really solid and smooth running due to using ball bearings. First job though was to start hacking them about so they will slide both ways. To do this I cut back the end stop just enough to allow the slider past but not the ball bearing cage. I was not convinced it would work but it does!

Only problem was the dust and swarf from the cutting wheel got into the bearings and made them really crunchy. Soap and water didn't do any good but a cycle in the dishwasher has done the trick!

I also made up a couple of 'L' beams from timber to form the sides of the new board as without a top I think it needs the extra strength. If the weather is OK tomorrow will crack on with this even though I really do have some proper work to do!

I cannibalised an old Filing cabinet for the runners with the intention of doing just as you have. Might be time for me to dig them out from wherever I've hidden them!
