The Works - Lights

PaternosterRow

The much awaited package from Express Models arrived on Friday so I got beavering away on Saturday evening and have just finished. I used their pendant lights on my Barrow Hill model so was familiar with the electronics involved. This time, however, they made up a bespoke dimmer switch so I can play around with the light levels. A few pics so far.

This last shot is a close up of the elevated works office at the rear. The steps are from Scalelink and were easily folded using steel rulers and a pair of small pliers. The pendant lights are brilliant and although the lot cost me £45 along with the associated power supply and dimmer switch they are great value for money. Anything else would just compromise the overall effect.

Now it's on to another half office on the other side, the overhead cranes and other works associated bits and pieces before more locos. Got to be careful though as I've been warned to stop bending the credit card for a while!

Pure magic, Mike! The office looks great too. I'm impressed how fast you model, and yet the results look like something that has taken years to do.

I can only concur with Mikkel, Job's Modelling & Wenlock: Genius!!!

As I admire your photos, Mike, I can almost hear the sounding echoing around the building. Amazing sense of atmosphere.

Thank you.

Cheers, Mikkel.

Don't be too impressed as with the speed as I've plenty of time on my hands now I'm part-time - there's always a good side to recessions!  I'm not one for the telly or lolling about either (although I do have my lazy moments) so I just tend to plow on with things.  Julie gets a bit upset and complains that she has become a bit of a 'modeling widow' - better than being a golf widow as at least she knows where I am!  Also, I use Scalescenes textures for quick results as I'd find it very hard to replicate brick and timber work the traditional way and, in fact, if you were to zero in on some of the finishes you'd be appalled at how crude things really are (that ain't false modesty either).  This is the trick to my speedy layouts.  What I've created is essentially a giant light box model and it's the play of the internal lighting and the way that natural light comes through the windows that really brings it all to life.  Starting it off was a bit of a leap of faith, but I knew from my Barrow Hill layout that you can get some dramatic lighting effects with well placed light sources so it seems to be turning out OK.   This time I really tried hard to get things square and straight as these, in my opinion, are essential in creating a good illusion rather than concentrating on the small details.  Hope all that makes sense.

Exelent modelling,

Like the overall view of the shed and the lighting in the office.

 Thanks, Job.

Love those Scalescenes Textures - they don't half save an awful lot of time.  The little clock and notice boards in the office are all from their kits and look pretty convincing from a distance.  I also used cut down Factory Windows from the Brassmaster range - you can't beat etched windows.

Hi Jonte - and you call me an old charmer!!! :)

Can't wait to see your roof develop - see it through to the end because it'll give you a dramatic station setting.  These roofs are tedious projects but are really worth it in the long run.

Hi Mike, that's a good point about things being square and straight as key to creating an illusion. I agree very much. It's as if the brain first checks to see if things are "right" in that respect, and if they are, then it relaxes and fills in the small details all by itself - even if they are not all there!

The whole issue about whether details matter or not in creating an illusion is very interesting. I think some details do matter in adding to believability, but the trick is to identify which ones. Eg as mentioned before I think the electrical conduit for the overhead cranes that you have chosen to include adds a whole lot to the scene.
