Aire Valley Railway

Hi.

This post will be mostly images of the stages in the construction of the Wndermere vessel M.V.Swan.. I mentioned in my posting of 11th June the hull is built on the plank and frame method. I'm guessing most of you will know this method. I will now do one of my digressions.. I see over the next fifteen years all the remaining signal boxes are to be closed and twelve Railway Operating Centres will cover the whole of the system. On the one hand it seems drastic and maybe will on some signallers but I guess it's logical. Just recently the iconic box at Hest Bank has finally closed though for some time it just controlled the level crossing. Also not far from Hest Bank Bare Lane has also closed..On Thursday I'm heading off to East Grinstead fo a

week. Among other things I'm looking forward to a journey on the extended Bluebell Railway This will be the last post until I get back.

Regards. Derek

The vessel looks delightful! Full of folk having a good day out, too.

I hope you enjoy your Bluebell experience as much as I did in May. They really have got things pretty much as we might wish, and the link to the national network is icing on everyone's cake, I think.

The box at Horsforth has now gone. Signalling was all transferred to Harrogate (I'm not sure if that means the semaphores on the line from Harrogate to York are now lights or not). The box was demolished earlier this year to make room for sidings for a new peak time Leeds/Horsforth commuter.  It was kind of nice standing on the platform at Horsforth, seeing the old goods shed (albeit now part of a timber yard), the box just down the line, and the pair of sidings. Echos of the old station.
