Been a long time since I added anything to the blog on weathering so here is a recent commission - A blue Western Region Class 47 - Amazon.

 

The Heljan 47 is big and very heavy. Weathering something this size needs good reference colour photos - and I have a number of these but not of this loco.

As usual - top down - water and black ink, then bottom up brown ink and water mix as a base coat followed by powders once the ink is dry to the touch.

interestingly enough the other side came out slightly differently... the photo editor seems to have decided to lighten the colours on this shot

The worst part of the process was the roof - Heljan have given nice clean grey panels which took a bit to weather down - there is added texture on these and around exhausts etc using weathering powder added to wet ink

Thank you. I don't get many blue O gauge diesels to weather so this was an interesting challenge.

not sure yet - I generally ink them then add "dirt" powder but the owner is thinking about changing the wheels .....

 

It doesn't take too long to do so its easy whichever way he wants them.

An a "N Gauger" the top of a model is usually the first thing we see and the roof on this model is brilliant, all you need is the blue haze escaping from the exhausts

been talking to Charlie Petty about this - has been done in O gauge but he reckons I could engineer a mini fan and smoke source in 4mm.... thinking that one over...

From what I can remember of travelling as a child on the blue boxes as a kid, you would need to fit yourself with fog lights, I remember once the rugger team where all in the first coach behind a class 40, all of us hanging out the widows then the beast stormed off, result a team of instants astmatics, happy days
