On top of the hill!

blog-0957983001381963292.jpgWell here it is my first bit of scenery in thirty odd years finished - and rather proud of it! Not perfect though! The hedges still don't look quite right to me although much improved by a pruning. They are spaced as per the picture I am using for reference and in this picture appear to have little vegetation left. I have given them a bit more greenery but there is still not enough to make it look like a hedge rather than a series of bushes. I have also let the grass creep too far under the hedge where in reality little would grow, so will have to sort this out. The static grass is too short as well but have just ordered some 6mm and 10mm stuff so another go over with that should sort the problem.

What I am really pleased with is the definition of the short cut down the side of the bank. It was all looking rather uniform and dry brushing wasn't working so in a brainwave moment tried pastel chalks which after a little rubbing in have worked really well. I need to put in some general weeds and then start building up all the rubbish that is such a prominent part of many pictures.

So with this success I have moved along the next board.

This bank will be a little bit different as I want to incorporate some sand bagged dug outs into it.

There will be a road running between the bottom of the bank and the railway and to provide a bit of contrast I am considering making this of corduroy construction, that is wooden logs laid down - another challenge!

Congratulations on your scenery.  Like yourself, I'm catching up after a 30-odd year gap and am pleased to find that the added patience, which the years bring, yields results!  My recollection from WW1 photos is that hedges and trees seem to have a rather 'blasted' look, so I would say yours look right for the scenario, and your 'path' is excellent - great for kids on mountain bikes, if you ever change your time frame!  I assume that you will eventually have a back-scene, which could provide more depth to the hedge.

Thanks for that. I think that the materials available now help no end as well. I like the mountain bike idea! Am starting to think about the back scene now and have some pretty good ideas - more modern materials. Have been working on the dug out today and really enjoying it - some pics later.

Sorry, forgot to say that what I think I shall do about the hedge is to make a couple more bushes and plant them in between to make it a more effective barrier.
