My Big Building!

blog-0486969001388191884.jpgThanks for all the amusing comments on the last post and am glad so many people enjoyed my Christmas dinner! Now, back to more ordinary stuff (beans on toast!), or my second building which has now become my BIG BUILDING!. I guess it was the same size when I started it but with the addition of end walls and the garden it has got an awful lot chunkier and pretty impressive really.

Here is one of the balcony of which I am really pleased. I just drew out an idea on a piece of card, stuck some double sided tape on and then placed the bits on top and soldered it all up. The hardest part was making the rings which I parted off from a piece of tube on the lathe.

And one of the inside. I have since sprayed much of this black - see I do learn from experience! Another useful result from my cellar tidying of the other week is that I now have about six wood dyes I didn't know I had so have made some lovely concoctions for the various bits of internal woodwork (sorry no pic yet)

And here is one with a DVD just to show the true scale of the thing.

Have just been pondering the fencing tp go on the low brick wall at the front. My natural instinct is to make it , and probably as complicated as the original but on costing it up it would be twice as much as a pack of Scalelink etched fencing. I did consider other alternative materials but just don't think they will be as sturdy as brass.

My other dilemma is what to do about the window frames. The pictures show only very little surviving (which would be very easy to reproduce), but would it make the finished model look - well , unfinished?

Great building.

I think also an "unfinished" building can look very convincing on your layout.

Personally I try to see a building also in the total concept of the scene I try to make.

I'm very impressed with your balcony and how you 'soldered it up'  Whenever I try something like that, the older joints come apart as I try to make later ones!  How do you hold it all together for soldering?

Quite a lot of railings actually, although I must admit that there is less in the second photo I have (a building behind has also almost disappeared between the two pictures). Although far too late for this layout I can feel a bit of a research project coming on for the village of Feuchy  as seems to have some very interesting features.

As to soldering the balcony I will not lie by saying it went perfectly first time but was not too hard. The bits were stuck down to a piece of double sided tape (conveniently transparent), over my drawing. I did make life easier for my self by using 188 degree solder for the main frame and then turned the iron down and used 70 degree for the little bits. You can also prevent other joints coming apart by using a heat sink in the form of a mini bulldog clip.

Brilliant!

The attention to detail is the mark of a great modeler - very well done and I can't wait to see this in situ when all the fallen debris has been placed around it.  This layout is going to look fantastic when it all falls together.  Another great and interesting build with lots of tips and construction insight.  Keep the posts coming.
