An Important step - and a huge sigh of relief!

blog-0252297001398890060.jpgIt is not often that four pieces of plywood can be called a significant achievement but that is just what happened today. In my attempt to get more of the 'infrastructure' completed I tackled the thorny problem of transporting the boards. A trip to the local independent DIY shop last night resulted in a very handy four foot by three foot piece of ply being being sawn in quarters. I was rather worried that I might have to get an 8x4 but this piece was ideal and a good bit cheaper!

After rather longer than I anticipated I had the first pair of boards securely joined;

Then first moment of truth - fitting them in the car;

What a relief! At this point they actually went on their first journey as was time to pick the little one up from school and had not finished the other pair yet and couldn't be bothered to take them out again. Shortly after returning I had the other set ready;

And to my immense relief they both fitted. I

I know they were designed to fit but I was a bit worried as they had grown a bit with patten makers dowels and the end boards themselves which I had not factored in. The last shot you can also see that there is room for at least some of the trestles by the side with the others going on top. The final fiddle yard board will also fit on top but will also fit in the top box if I have to as am not underestimating how much space the lighting, fascia and back scene will take up as well as all the stock boxes and other gubbins.

One interesting thing that I did find out today was how to use the big 12mm wood drill. I had terrible trouble with this snagging on the wood when I drilled the dowels doing what I thought was correct and stepping up through drill sizes. On one hole I forgot and it just went straight through, no problem with just a small pilot hole!

One other job today was to drill a few extra holes in the adjustable trestles to allow complete flexibility with my height adjusters as the space between the pre-drilled holes was just too much. A not terribly pleasant job which took far too long.
