Lighting and Fascia

blog-0323077001406147823.jpgYesterday I managed to get all the background and fascia supports shortened and daubed with anonymous black paint as well as much of myself and a 'helpful' 8 year old!

And reinstated on the layout. I think the following pic should show how it has ended up. They have now been lowered so that the backdrop is only 18 inches and brought back so the front is level with the front of the board. This has actually made a huge difference to the stability of the whole contraption.

I then cut various bits of black Corex (the plastic that estate agents signs and the like are made of), strong enough, light enough easy enough to cut and cheap enough!) Then got out the velcro. I need to get a lot more of this to do the job properly though.

Meanwhile, I had fitted a length of LED light strip to one of the front pieces

And then we had this;

Only got one strip in so far but really pleased with the result. The next strip will be easy as there are wire attached to both ends of the 5m role I bought, what will be interesting though will be trying to solder wires onto the remaining cut off portions so I can use them. Not sure at the moment if this is possible or if I will have to buy another, shorter, length.

Incidentally, the back drop is back at the printers who very kindly agreed to lop six inches off the bottom of it for me and re hem it. As long as this works I should manage to avoid the cost of a Mk2 version.

Answer to can the cut off bits be used is YES! A bit tricky removing the silicon like outer covering but can be done and a fine wire soldered onto the small exposed copper contact.

This is looking really good. Can't wait to see it with the backscene in place.

I'm fairly sure that there are connectors for joining LED strips but I expect your method is perfectly OK. I'm planning to replace the fluorescent tubes above my layout with these strips.

Have actually just ordered some of those connectors via Ebay to get it all wired up. The problem was that I had a 5 meter roll of lights but this had to be split up into 5 sections to remain portable. I will now solder my fine wires to each section and then add one of the official connectors via a Hydra like multi adapter also just acquired from Ebay. I have left room for a second strip of lights if necessary and am quite tempted to fit these as well but as cool white to give some variation, think it might be ten quid well spent!
