I've spent the last couple of days restoring the loco to a semblance of cleanlinesss. It was an 'executors sale' of a former member's stock and this had obviously been sitting in its box for some time.

Several applications of 'Cillit Bang' (does anyone else think this product is weaker than it used to be??) and about 15 fibreglass brush refills later,

the old lady is looking somewhat better. I still need to get rid of some errant blobs of solder, but that will have to wait 'til tomorrow when I can grind down an old file to act as a scraper.

An old lady with a tarnished character - really, you should speak more nicely of your locos. They're like plants, you know, they only thrive if you talk sweetly to them. I bet the chassis will bind now :-)

But finally a good use for Cillit Bang, must remember that next time I swear at the adverts. What a difference your cleaning has made already.

Ahh - but she scrubs up nicely!

Not too happy with 'Cillit Bang' - but I might be using the wrong variety (the 'limescale buster'...)  Threre's so many diferent types now.  As I indicated, it took several applications - and it didn't appear to shift much!  Feel free to keep on swearing!

The big difference was the use of a fibreglass pen (just bought some latex gloves although a tad late!) and 'elbow grease!

Hi

I gave up on Cillet Pop!   Try Bar Keepers Friend... far superior on brass models.

Massive improvement already.

+1 for barkeeper's friend. It's a fine powder, so is slightly abrasive, and I mix it into a paste and work it into the metal. Big advantage over other powder-based cleaners is that it doesn't leave residue when rinsed.
