Last signal installed

Well I'm pleased to say that the last signal has been installed on the layout. Once again I used one of Jurassic Models socket and servo mounts to install the signal onto the baseboard and a GF controls module to control the movement of the signal arms. http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/blog/1131/entry-15869-signals-for-sherton-abbas-part-3-the-bouncing-arms/

There's a considerable amount of "gubbins" required underneath the baseboard to control the signal arms, but the use of the mount and control module does make things easier!

The signal looked a bit too clean and stark, so I used my airbrush to apply a bit of weathering and represented some weeds growing through the ballast with some green dyed paint brush bristles.

The rest of the trackwork also looked a bit too pristine, so once again the airbrush was used to tone down the colour and represent a bit of Edwardian grime:-) Some vegetation is beginning to appear on the layout, but this is very much a work in progress. I still need to treat myself / build a static grass applicator and find a U.K.distributor for Polak fibres http://www.polakmodel.com/en/text/main/About-us-1.html who's products look excellent in my opinion.

At the Wells show, I was delighted to discover that the range of parts designed by Ivan Smith of Southwark Models are now available from Roxey Mouldings http://www.roxeymouldings.co.uk/ The range includes some lovely platform seats, barrows, bicycles and point levers and I couldn't resist buying a selection of bits and pieces for the layout. Amongst these goodies was a little fret of etched brass components that built up into an early type GWR point lever.

Once assembled and painted the lever was installed onto the layout to control the yard point. The associated rodding and 90 degree crank were fabricated from 0.6mm brass wire and the etched brass crank supplied in the kit.

Well that's the latest progress on the layout, still loads more to do but at least the points and signals work and trains move without pushing them!

Best wishes

Dave

Hi Dave,

The layouts looking great, I'm afraid I am lagging behind with mine although saying that I had a quick measure up the other day and only another 15' of baseboards to build before it becomes a roundy-roundy.

I like the buffer stops are they the ones from Ragstones? And your choice of ballast is that from Woodland scenics? Sorry for all the questions but that layout of yours is turning into one of the greats in my opinion.

Regards,

Martyn.

Hi Martyn, thanks for the positive comments and really glad you like the progress! Yes the buffer stops or "stop blocks" as Mike (Stationmaster) tells me I should call them :-) are from Ragstone. I've been waiting for him to produce a GWR example for ages and was pleased to find he had them for sale at Telford. They aren't cheap at

Hi Dave,

I also brought a " stop block kit " at Telford, I just had to have them although I am still nowhere near ready to build and install them. I took some photos of exactly this type of stop block taken at the East Somerset Rly, and the plan was to have them made by 3D printing, so I ended up having some rodding stools commissioned instead.

Yes it is great to have the space for a roundly roundy but being a lone modeller I sometimes wonder if I have bitten off more than I can chew, but it is not a race and as the building of the baseboards are nearly done, I can hopefully look forward to some serious track laying this winter.

Regards,

Martyn.

Absolutely delectable Dave

Thanks Mike, I'm particularly pleased that you approve, as after all that little signal was your idea! :-)

Best wishes

It'll be worth all the effort in the end, I can just imagine being sat with a glass of wine and watching the trains rumble by! I'm looking forward to watching your track laying progress, I think a major celebration will be needed when the first train circumnavigates the room!:-)

Beautiful. Thanks also for showing the point lever fret. Roxey has no photos so I've been wondering what the 4mm type looked like. He has a 1900s pattern too I see.

"Edwardian grime" - how dare you! I refuse to believe there was such a thing on the GWR. From what I've heard, the GWR had people out licking the rails clean every morning :-)

Yes standards have definitely slipped and I'll also be having a word with that Albert Cruickshank and his gang about the amount of weeds growing in the track bed!:-)

And they had to pay for the privilege...
