Railways in the Dudley Area (#2)

I chose the Dudley area as the location for the new layout: the only snag was that the LNWR did not extend to the south-west: (See the first map).

Something had to be done, so I split the map east-wast and added another couple of miles to the Dudley area (as if it isn't bad enough as it is!). Next thing was I added another line, a direct link between Dudley and the LNWR at Craven Arms. The rationalization is that this is "a direct link between South Wales and the West Midlands). (See the second map)..

The final thing to do was to place stations with Blackcountry-sounding names. This was easier than I thought because Dudley is dotted with -hills, -holes and -ends. The first module, the 4' by 1' will be Shut End, which I hope will be followed by Bears End... Can't wait to get started.

If you read, please comment (positive or negative)... You will probably come up with something that I hadn't even considered. Who knows? It might even be something good about the Midland Railway!

I like this idea - guess where I live!

By the way, as you probably know, the real Shutt End is spelled with a double t.

My own layout, currently under construction, will be christened 'Silver End'

Thanks, SP1, I was Bilston born and bred, but one of my grandmothers came from Dudley.  I look forward to seeing reports of your layout as and when.

All the best,

Ken

Just off and north of your map was the station delightfully miss-named Daisy Bank! -- providing a direct line to W'ton LL , and my grandmother's house in the shadow of Molyneaux football ground. The line and station were in a cutting, my school (as a 7-10yr old) was perched on the eastern side of the cutting almost immediately beyond the station bridge.

Small world, DonB, my dad was born and grew up in Daisy Bank and I remember traveling from the Daisy Bank and Bradley station with my mom back in the 1950's on our frequent trips to visit relatives in Dudley.  It was on one of these trips that I saw really old fashioned loco in Dudley station - it looked small with a very tall chimney and really stuck in my memory.  It didn't have a smoke box number plate and was very unlike the GWR locos that I was used too.  Years latter I realized that it must have been one of the last LNWR cauliflowers in existence.

I also remember that school, although I went to St Martins.

Thanks for bringing back memories,

All the best,

Ken.

Excellent choice.  You can still see traces signs of the lines by Bumble Hole.  I think that would be near the stations at WINDMILL END and DARBY END.  The old cold mine buildings are still there along with some of the bridges.

Thank you,  you wouldn't know the name of the mine, would you?

The sad thing is that British Railways had just finished renovating the Bumble Hole line stations in an attempt to attract more passengers when Beeching ordered its closure.

..........

You can find old OS maps of the area on the National Library of Scotland website.  See this link for example.  There are several Brick and Tile works in the area as well as coal shafts.  Plenty of names on these maps from the turn of the 19th/20th centuries.  There are also several tramways to provide a track bed for your S.Wales link?
