GCR 11A no.858

The latest candidate for a rebuild and backdating is my hackbashed LNER D6, which is currently in the works to be rebuilt after the fashion of the photograph of her at Trafford Park in GC days in a Yeadons volume.

Work so far has taken the form of lengthening the smokebox by means of a new paper wrapper, reprofiling the splashers and fitting cast brass chimney and dome, which really transform the look of the model.

It's getting there slowly.

Hi James, looks interesting. If you're modelling it in later superheated and lengthened smokebox form but with a Robinson chimney and extended cab then I guess you will be representing the loco in late pre-grouping state or maybe very early LNER? If so, I'm very intrigued, that dome could be either the original height one or the LNER period one which was cut down slightly? If it's the latter, do you have a source where these may be procured please, if at all..?!

I have an original height one but I'm hesitant to reduce it by taking a horizontal slice out as the original height dome is also useful for other locos like the Kitson Class B (LNER J60) . I could do with assessing how to replicate it as a cast really.

Regards,

Nick

Thank you!

The date I'm aiming for is around 1921/22, so it has the Robinson chimney and the original dome.

Now the original model I hacked up to give me the boiler and dome for the D6 was a Triang Jinty.  The Jinty's dome is very close to the right size, it's just slightly too short and maybe a little too narrow- so it might be an option to pursue for an LNER D6 dome (if not from the Triang/ Hornby model then maybe a brass or whitemetal casting).

Hi James, another interesting project. Can I ask how you fix the paper wrapper in place?

The new smokebox wrapper is just glued in place over the old one; if you use something like UHU glue which takes a little while to dry, you can fit it in place and then have a little time to make final adjustments before the glue sets.  You can probably tell it is a little fragile at the moment- I seem to have dented the new smokebox wrapper!- but a bit of filler will sort that out before too long.
