Pugsley

I've made a bit more progress with the 455, with all four bodyshells assembled. The bodyshells go together quite well, but I have had to do a fair bit of fettling to get the ends to line up properly with the roof and the sides to line up properly with the ends. No major surgery was required, just a little judicious filing here and there, particularly the vertical section of the rebate in the sides, where it meets the end of the roof.

All 4 cars with filler applied around the ends, awaiting rubbing down. The most time consuming part of the last couple of weeks has been the removal of all the raised details around the windows and the doors - only necessary when using Jim's etches (which I'd recommend, as it moves the detail of the model into a whole other level). There are also a couple of other good reasons to use the etches, but more of that another time.

The other thing that I noticed is that the cab roof finishes straight across in the kit, leading to a 0.5 (ish) overhang in relation to the end of the sides. This needs to be eliminated by gently filing the roof section from a point just left of the corridor connection to the outside edge - the real things curve at these points. Hopefully it is visible in the pic above.

Next job is to finish sanding down the first application of filler, before skimming over with a second layer and gently sanding that back.

On the plus side, judging by the level of interest so far, I don't think anyone will be announcing an RTR 455 any time soon ;) Anyone want to buy some Replica Mk1's and some MJT parts... ;)

Hi Pugsley,

I'm following the class 455 with interest. I agree that the Bratchall kit go together easily enough - although filing has been needed on the roof section of all seven of the vehicles I have put together.

Question - I note that you have used the Bratchall cab. Does Jim do (as part of his window etch) the gangway for the 455? It is a very nice piece of etch if you can get hold of it. - the trouble comes in making the rubber bellows. For me I have not been able to make them convincing enough, and recoursed to the Bachmann class 150 gangways.

I'm keeping my eye on this Pugs,

Cheers,

Chris.

Hi Chris

I do a gangway as part of my 150/2 and 318 bits but not on its own.

Hurst do a gangway etch on its own

Cheers

Jim

These are coming on nicely Martin :) I'm guessing they'll be finished in NSE? If so a lovely complex set of masking awaits! ;)

I wonder if anyone will ever do a decent 507/508 to make my Merseyrail based layout a reality?

Chris - Thanks, I'm glad it's not just me that found them a bit of a challenge to put together well. There is a front plate included in the etch, which looks very nice. I'm going to give shaping what's already there a go, before finishing it off with Jim's etch.

James - Yes, it is going to be finished in NSE livery - I'm not looking forward to that bit! Keep an eye on what Electra Railway Graphics are doing - they proposed a 313/4/5 kit a while back, so a 507/508 would be a logical development of that. I'm hoping for one of those to become available too, I'd like to do a 455/7 at some point in the future :)

You're too kind Alex :icon_redface: :icon_redface:

I haven't thought about it too much, I expect it'll be similar to the Mk1's I did back a long. Got to get it built and painted first though!
