I've now concidered another possibility, long thin boards. I havn't yet fully developed this into a complete design. The layout lengthis the same 1.34m, but the width is reduced to 1m.

The layout boards should be as light weight as possible to allow it to be carried as hand luggage on a ferry and strong enough to withstand being carried as hold luggage too.
