4292 finally has a chimney

Waiting for me in the post when arriving home from work today was a small packet from PDK, most of which is now put away for Monday evening modelling (when looking after the children for my wife's evening out means the only modelling is confined to the spare bedroom rather than the garage.). This should see steps added to 4025s tender, fall plates added to both my granges, the bell fitted to the front of 6000 and a chimney for my manor.

It also included a 42xx chimney to fit in place of the damaged part on 4292. A little fettling to the underside of the casting to match the radius of the horn you boiler and it was easily glued in place with superglue.

A superheater lubricator cover also needed to be added, this was filed up from a piece of 40thou plasticard using the 72xx body as a guide before supergluing in place. Both parts now need a quick coat of black (if it arrives in time this will be painted black at the same time as 4025 at the weekend.

I have also made a start on weathering, the black is not my finest ever finish, and has some orange peel effect. This coupled with the locos intended use (on route to the works for a major overhaul and a repaint into green) means it needs to be dirtied up! The intention is to cover up the paint imperfections with muck!
In the long run I want another model of the same loco in ex works green to run in the opposite directionblogentry-54-0-66025100-1489528983_thumb.jpg

I've had the final artwork approved for the number plates for this (and the other locos in the fleet that are without etched numbers), so hopefully that will arrive from narrow planet soon. Then just need to get it fitted with a decoder

Hi Fatadder,

Thanks for the update. You may recall I'm the bloke who suggested PDK back in January.

Now you have the castings, are you pleased with them? Did it actually take nearly three months to supply the parts or did you only order recently?

I'd say the 42xx chimney looks good - somewhat more slender in the body than Hornby's effort but with a much broader 'lip' which is correct.

I'm interested in the KGV bell as well and have seen the photo on you blog; looks good!

I have a "bog standard" blue Hornby King (6021) which I also want to convert to KGV to represent it around 1952 when it was shedded at Bath Road and made regular forays up the "North & West" as far as Shrewsbury. I'm watching you work with interest and admiration! I've no idea how you do it given the time pressures you seem to be under.....

Best Regards,

Sorry for the delayed response. Only just spotted this comment.

I ordered initially and was told there would be a delay before I could place the order untill late Jan due to the owners holiday. There was then a further delay due to PDK moving workshops. So I suspect future orders should be a lot more prompt.

I am almost certainly going to place an order for another 42xx chimney in the coming months to replace that on the 72xx. It's certainly a marked improvement.

As for the king, if ordering modelmasters plates don't make the mistake I did and forget to order the separate pack containing the cabside medals. (Fox on the other hand include them in the same pack). Mine are currently on order and should be here soon...
