Mk2F DBSO Conversion

I wanted to do a fleet of these DBSOs - modelling the differences in the prototypes as they run today. I was somewhat phased by the amount of work involved in doing the conversions but, I thought, printing all the parts so that they would go together pretty cleanly using existing moulded shut lines would make things easier.

I created kits of parts for each variant:

  • 9701/9714 in Network Rail with generator and the UV lamp front brackets
  • 9702/9703 with the wider centre window and no generator
  • 9708 in Network Rail with generator and the UV lamp front brackets
  • 9707 (and the rest of the DRS fleet) with the different light layout to the NR versions
  • 9711 (and the other Anglia/Intercity variants)

I designed the cab to be a one piece replacement and the additional separate details to convert the coaches (shrk fin aerials, extra rovac vents, new cab vent, fuel tanks, air reservoirs....) and the snowplough with buffer beam detail moulded in to fit a NEM pocket.

First print. Came off OK. Needs priming to bring the detail out rather than this slightly translucent resin finish, but, it will work!

Whilst I work on getting all the photos back in I thought I'd post the work in progress on an Anglia version.

This has the printed in flat handrails, rivets and bolt detail enhanced. I was going to wait until it was finished but this puts some colour back into the blog!!:

I dont know what's been going on with the website, this is the first time I have been able to get on it. Have to say that it's looking spot on so far! Will sort out the DRS DBSO as soon as I can, but here is where I am at so far.

Applied the decals to one side. I was tempted to mask and paint the white lines but in the end went with transfers:

So I am deciding what to do with this one! I might make it 9711 and finish it to be on the restoration line in the shed....still need the numbers and tiny details..including cutting back the transfer on the wind deflectors and painting that in. Other than, not my period....

Anglia progress bit slow my end, but will ask, where did you get the Rog 47 in the background?

That’s a Vitrains that I did myself. “Jack Frost”. The translator coaches are complete 3D prints.

Sharing a post of Bachmann 9702 and 9703 against my converted Bachmann BSO, 9708, with UV lights and sound - mine doesn't have the door lock lights but it does have the switchable headlight... I think there's enough functions to implement the full suite. Maybe on 9701....!

Brilliant work , amazing that 17 odd coaches can give so much fun.  The cad work is a great skill and the printers have come on leaps and bounds.   I will have to keep an eye on this Blog !

Happy modelling

I had another go at 9701 now that I have Bachmann's versions. I went to more detail on the window frames and sized them much more like Bachmann's. I also took a new approach to the UV lights and console. This time I printed these separately to fit later. On 9708 I had to detail the cab and then fit it, ready painted to the ready painted body. Because I think I can now add the LEDs tot eh bracketed and insert them and the console after I could do it later! I can also now choose to fit it or not.

With 9708 I added a Loksound V5 FX to the what was a non-DCC Bachmann MK2F BSO converted. This time around I am going to use a DCC Bachmann version - the Virgin one seems to have the door lights too. Since I'll have to customise the headlights anyway I'm going to see if I can get all the functions out of the Bachmann board.... we will see! Then to decide if I need a second decoder for sound..........

There may be scope for some Bachmann DRS DBSO fronts as they have totally cheaped out on the lighting and have the same light pattern as the Anglia tooling... very dissappointed! However this stuff is groundbreaking! Keep it up!

Yeah, maybe, Just a front so that the yellow can be replaced without affecting the main livery probably works. I think the main challenge would be the lighting circuits to fix them with bi-colour LEDs and a way to route the headlight! I'm experimenting with printing light pipes at the moment! Ideally it would be developed with an actual model in hand but......

the door lights on the NR coaches are now linked to the fire system, if the fire bell goes off then the light comes on (only ever had it once!)

@big jim do the door lights flash or are they solid when the alarm goes, and, are they independent or both at the same time!?

They are solid and come on together on the relevant coach where the alarm is going off

Well I actually nodded the front end by scratch building light clusters and using bi colour towels LEDs and smd LEDS. Really couldn't live with the Bachmann front end! The lack of toplight was sacrilege!

Playing around with slightly bigger UV LEDs for use with these brackets - 5630 not 1206s. I also worked out that if I put a thin coat of black paint on the LED the UV still shines through:

I am also trying to work out if I can modify the Bachmann lighting board with DCC chip to control the UVs and door lights too.....it might be possible but then again a second decoder could do it if I put in sound anyway...
