March 2023 - Lima Class 156 Super Sprinter Part 1 - Bogie Frame Mods
I’ve always thought the Lima Class 156 Super Sprinter is pretty good model representation shape wise, although been a model from 1989, it’s a long way behind the Realtrack Class 156 in terms of detail and features. But these are hard to find and production runs short.
However I’ve started to have another look at what can be done with the Lima / Hornby Class 156. The following is available:-
- Midland Valenta Class 156 underframe detailing 3D printed kit
- Midland Valenta Class 156 cab interior 3D printed kit.
- DCC Head and Tail Lights.
- Interior Lighting.
Anyway as a first step, I’ve cleaned up the BT38 / BP38 bogie frame improve the realism.
This is a photo taken earlier in the week of a BT38 bogie on a Class 155 earlier in the week.
The BT38 is common across Sprinter Class’s 150/153/155/156. As we can see the Lima / Hornby Class 156 bogie is frame is quite decent, although admittedly the Bachmann Class 150 bogie is superior, but £12 each from Bachmann spares.
Starting to remove parts of the outer frame that stiffens it up.
Removing the outer frame which on the real bogies isn’t there is objective to improve the realism.
The finished effect as fitted back on the model.
The next step would be to remove the mounting for the coupler.
One observation is it does make the bogie frame more flexible, which could cause the wheelsets to fall out.…
The next step is to consider the wheelsets. The wheelset on a BT38 / BP38 is 840mm, which scaled down to 1:76 is 11mm (or 5.5mm in 2mm). However these aren’t available. The nearest sizes available are 10.5mm from DCC Concepts or 12mm from Bachmann. So to be continued…
