Ah, this might be a bit awkward...

Hello :)

I think I have quite a big problem with the layout now. I was expecting the ballast on the second baseboard to lighten when the glue dried but have realised that its not actually going to change colour at all!!

As you can see there is quite a difference in colour between the two baseboards and to say its a bit annoying is an understatement! but I know that it cannot go right all of the time. It now looks like I will have to chip all the ballast off and redo it as I cannot really do much with that (BTW the top one is correct!)

I have learnt another lesson though...

Even if ballast is labelled the same it doesnt mean it is the same!

Luckily I have enough of the original ballast left...

Hi Missy.

How much have you done on this particular board?

I had a similar situation once but found repeated washes of light grey/ brown just about saved the day. Though I doubt you will get it quite as nice looking as the top picture, you don't lose anything by trying first, if you are taking it off anyway.

I know you are something of a perfectionist, but to chip off all that ballast would surely be a spirit draining task?

Regards,

Chris

Hey Missy - Ditto the above - chipping it off sounds a bit drastic - could you not work a little of your magic with the airbrush? Pete

The top looks a bit yellow (probably the lighting). My experience is that ballast is always darker once laid. I'd definitely try to go about re-colouring by flooding the ballast with watered down paint.

Surely there must be a solution, how would you remove the ballast from between the sleepers let alone in between the pointwork without damaging or lifting the trackwork  and we are talking 2mm here :O. Wish I could come up with some answers for you missy, I think you have to try the touch up with paint idea first.

cannot you use the excuse that, as with the prototype, the track has been re-ballasted ?

Hi Guys smile.gif

Thank you for the useful advice. As Chris said I am a bit of a perfectionist and at the moment the only way I will be happy is if I strip it off and start again, painful I know but it will be worth it. I just thought it was worthwhile posting something about it so hopefully people will remember it in the future and not make the same mistake.

If you could carefully lift the track in a number of chunks. Perhaps by sliding a pallette knife underneath. Then soak in hot water that should soften the PVA. Then relay. Might be easier that chipping it all out. Try chipping a bit out first though.

Its real bad luck.

Forget about lifting the track- that would disturb your electrics - not exactly your favorite job I believe.

You could grind up a bit of brass to make a chisel just the right size to go between the sleepers and under the rail. Clearance would be tight.

Hello Don smile.gif

That is pretty much what I have planned to do to tackle this but the idea was to use a flat screwdriver instead. I am still not looking forward to doing it but I know that its really the only thing I can do to be happy with it.
