Trying to create the ultimate class 92.

Sometime ago i realised although i enjoy modelling steam i think the modern railway system is very intresting & the WCML is something that i have a keen intrest in modelling at some stage.

Over the past couple of month i have collected a small fleet of modern locos & one being a Hornby class 92 in EWS livery. The Hornby model is rather dated now & although it captures the loco well their are certainly areas that need improving greatly.

My model i picked up cheap at £25 missing the pantographs & the central wheels on the motor bogie are wobbly but these items are going to be discarded anyway.

So whats the plan for this project, simple to take the basic body & detail from the Hornby offering & make it into the ultimate class 92. My plan is to repower the whole model with a Hollywood Foundary custom chassis , Hurst pantographs & fitting's, Express model's lightstore lighting & any other parts i may need to finish it off.

Most of the item's i need to complete the project i have already, i've made a couple of order's this weekend for lighting & some etchs forthe channel tunnel circles that are fitted to the 92 body's.

Tomorrow i'm going to make a proper start on the model firstly with the cab's. If memory serves the guy behind Wells Green TMD has a bit on his site about detailling the cab of the 92 so i will be reading that sometime over the course of the weekend.

Nice to see 92s getting some attention. The Hornby 92 bodyshell has a lot going for it - ie - it looks like a 92 (the lima one is not so good around the cabs)- one thing Hornby missed , thats quite distinctive on the real things is the black surrounds on the light cluster covers - Its well worth taking the time , either with a steady hand and paintbrush - or with a lining pen , to carefully paint them on - It totally transforms the model, and would be a shame not to do them if your going to detail up the rest of the loco. Hopefully you can make them on on this:

Look forward to seeing piccys of yours too!

Thanks Gent's rolleyes.gif i've spent the afternoon taking out the original pantograph's which is'nt the easiest task they are firmly placed. i'm off to bed now working tonight ( overtime ) to afford the chassis. I will add a few progress photos tomorrow of the basic work i have done. Tomorrow will be the first day i have done any proper modelling for over 8 month's & i must admit to being a little nervious about getting myself back into the saddle so to speak.

More work to follow.

Simon,

Have you thought about remotoring the loco? For the ultimate 92 it might be worth considering.

Sorry the curse of dyslexia meant I missed the reference to the Hollywood Foundry chassis - will it be to P4 standards? It sounds like an interesting option but I'm interested to know the cost for possible use on some of my own projects.

Jame's i have hit a bit of a wall regarding the chassis. After talking to Hollywood foundary i cant seem to find a option that is suitable for the locos chassis without having to compromise the cab detail. I have looked at varous other options that Hollywood do but none of them seem to to work. My model will be OO not P4, I'm not sure now what to do about the chassis system now is their any other companys who do custom chassis kits or RTR chassis's??

Could you pick up a Heljan 58 and see if that's any use for a remotoring project? The bogies are similar pattern but the loco is a little shorter so you'd need to create your own mountings - or otherwise a new Hornby 60? Is that a similar length (and again a similar bogie?)

Thats a good idea James i hadnt really thought of the RTR market for a doner. Looking on the Wells green tmd website James Makin used a Heljan 47 internals for a re motor the only thing is i dont feel confident enough to pull something like that off.

hollywood founday do a bogie called a gozunder which has the joint for the drive shaft directly behind the rear wheel & its flat so no gearboxes etc above the wheels. I thought this would be a good idea using the mashima semi sunk motor gearbox combo that hollywood also do but i have been told this wont work i cant understand why though??

Here are links to the parts i was thinking would power the model

Spent a little bit of time tonight clearing all the over sized Hornby mouldings from the roof ready to accept the Hurst models Pantograph kit. One thing that is clear to me is the Hurst kit is a little over sized i think because the pantograph head will not sit snug into the body its too wide. Since one of the panto's will be down & one fully up i think i will get away with it cool.gif

With the motor dept needing more research regarding something that will power it well i have decided to use whats already under the body to power it for now at least anyway.

I shall upload some photos of the progress tomorrow if i have time if not it will be over the weekend when i intend on building both the pantos & the Hurst channel tunnel etched circles.
