Coal Piles, Potato Pies

Further progress today, with second track now in place. Transoms (?) are being added between the timbers and then painting will take place. There probably ought to be some transom bolts too; these will be bits of steel wire, to be added after painting:

Meanwhile, attention turns to the contents of the drops; coal. I've been making some formers out of modelling clay to represent some of the larger piles of coal. These will be painted and covered in real coal and coal dust.

Simultaneously, I've also been making a potato clamp; this is the one in the top left hand corner that doesn't look coal-heapish. In the days before bulk storage / refrigeration / haulage, I recall that these were very common. I have seen one in the last week or so, but they are all but extinct nowadays; in this part of the country anyway. They were, of course, piles of potatoes covered with straw and soil and were an effective way of storing potatoes locally without lots of equipment or premises. We used to call them potato pies:

On a rather more sombre note, I see that I am approaching the end of my electrical solder. "So what?" you may ask. Well I've had this roll of solder for the best part of thirty years; it was ginormous when I got it as a teenager and has served me well over the years. When it arrived, it had a CEGB label on, but that was swiftly removed! A new roll has been purchased in anticipation but, I wonder, will things ever be the same? unsure.gif

Putting the "Dave Brubeck Quartet" as one of your Tags reveals a man of taste, recovering from a mis-spent youth?!

Coal drops progressing nicely, and I'd quite forgotten about Potato Clamps, although I have only read of them, there were no commercial growers in the Black Country of my youth.

Thanks for the comment, Don; although my youth was fairly well mis-spent, I only came to Jazz in my thirties. The tags on my posts designate current listening; I like to do my modelling with music on.

More on potatoes in due course!
