Dropping Coal; Make Way!

Moving straight on from the last post, or maybe at a bit of a curve anyway (!), the longitudinal timbers were inserted. These are Association point sleepers, copperclad PCB, trimmed to the appropriate lengths:

As these timbers are straight and the rail will be curved, the rail will deviate from the centreline of the timbers. But it is not as bad as it first appears. The rail is tacked, using etched chairplates, at every other pier to gain the smooth curve required on the rail. The second rail is attached in a similar manner, this time using track gauges to give accurate spacing:

Once I was happy with this, one rail was unsoldered and intermediate chairs slid under the rail:

Then spaced evenly and soldered:

One track down, cleaned and tested. The second track will hopefully be finished in the next couple of days:

Very nice, but I bet it was a bit of a pig to do. Are you using the Blackburn chairs for this?

The chairs are Bob Jones'; much easier as they're a single thick etch.

Surprisingly, once I'd worked out how I was going to do it, the actual process was fairly straightforward. Initially I tried to "ping" the intermediate chairs under the rail whilst it was soldered at both ends. This didn't work, and I unsoldered one end and slid the chairs into place.

About two hours work all told... cool.gif

Nice work Tony - I always find intricate tasks such as this help keep the 'swear box' topped up :P

I did consider using the individual Easitrac chairs welded to plasticard timbers. However I already have thousands of Bob's etched chairs (originally all track on the layout would have been soldered; just prior to the advent of Easitrac) and so I thought I should use some! blink.gif

Tony,

That's looking good for two hours work - I think it would have taken me nearer two days!

On bridges that have longitudinal timbers under the rails and curved track, the chairs 'wander' across the timbers anyway, so your solution is prototypical. There are special 'bridge' chairs which are narrower.

Funnily enough, I did flick through my "Bridges For Modellers" by LV Woods; an invaluable little tome for making model bridges etc. believable. And indeed I have filed some of the chairs to avoid excessive protrusions! Thanks for the confirmation Andy.
