Craven's DMU rewheeling to P4

Fen End Pit

Yesterday evening was spent rewheeling my Christmas present of a Bachmann Cravens DMU to P4. Santa Claus had also provided a set of wheels from Branchlines. These are stub axles are a direct replacement for the wheels for the OO wheels. The key thing is to get the new stub axles parallel and here meeting with friends in the possession of GW Models wheel press is an excellent idea.

The hardest bit is getting the motor bogie off and this is best done with small screwdriver on the inside end of bogie, a little tweak in the right place it popped off easily.

I had a bit of a scare this morning when the DCC played silly devils for a moment but all resolved itself. I've now painted the wheels so that they aren't shiny silver anymore. I'm very impressed by the running and general quality of the model. Next up is removing the couplings, trying to close couple the coaches together and get a DCC accessory decoder so that the lines on the trailer aren't always on.

As ever any suggestions welcome.

David

Re the close coupling on Bawdsey I've used 'Dingham' couplings on both 105/108 units, they are unobtrusive and you can get a very close join that'll work across B5/6 reverse curves on a crossover.

These models do look very good - I'm waiting for the power twin version. Regarding "close coupling", in my view DMU's never looked that close. I seem to recall their buffers were mounted on spacers resulting in quite a large gap between the ends of the bodies even with the buffer heads touching. For this sort of arrangement, I've found the Masokits couplings, used in conjunction with sprung buffers, to be an excellent solution. They can be made to suit differing vehicle spacings and can be adjusted for length on a trial & error basis simply by bending the coupling loop. If properly adjusted, they provide automatic coupling (but not uncoupling) making it easy to connect vehicles. Brake & heating pipes are represented by curved wires attached to the copling loop end.

Of course, there are also the bar type coupling (including the cast variety which actually look like screw couplings) and non-functions AJ's; but neither has the adjustability of the Masokits version.
