The Soldering Station

Actually only took a couple of hours... Longest job was trimming the length of the fence with a blunt hacksaw blade!

Here's the unit -

Although at least three years old, the 'plug protector' indicates the lack of use!

The 'bits' involved -

The pink sheet is asbestos - I thought about using it between the ply base and the steel plate 'just in case', but

and I didnt hold the thought  ! The clipped lead is the 'return' to the unit. I've reas on another forum that crocodile clips are not recommended. I did intend using using a washer for the connection - but the sales assistant forgot to put them in & I forgot to check!

The 'fence' is obviously cabable of a clamping effect & should provide a decent right-angle for those parts that require it.

Next will be a couple of trials, then - on with the loco.

during your trials - don't forget to put it on setting 6 'A-D' - you will soon realise why you don't ever use it on a kit - even in 7mm. But it makes you realise what happens when too much heat is used. Even on 3 brass wire gets vapourised.

Don't forget to acquire some square edged magnets these can prove more useful than a fence with some work as you can sandwhich a business card between the etch and the steel plate, providing electrical and thermal insulation, use a magnet at the edge to provide electrical continuity and you have the perfect arrangement to solder on things like door handles/hinges - using setting 1 of course.
