Porthole Stanier SK

Prevarication - something I appear to be good at..... I need a fair number of porthole Stanier period IIIs, but actually managing to complete one has been a bit of an uphill struggle. Suffice it to say, it's not a job I hugely enjoy! laugh.gif

Anyway, the first one to emanate from the works (minus glazing until I've varnished the sides) is below. I think I bought the sides for it about 7 or 8 years back. The donor base model is a scrap Replica open second and the interior comes from a Hornby model bought for pence. Paintwork is Humbrol 20, which is about as close as you're going to get to BR maroon - it's their old railway shade from what I am told by those in the know. Lining is HMRS pressfix.

Seems to have come out rather ok, so I might just get the pair of composites done on the results of this. A DC Kits mk1 roof has been sourced for the porthole one. :)

Might get round to completing a full rake if I'm really lucky! blink.gif

what a beaut...I knew you were working on this, but seeing it as they see if believing :)

how many required to complete a rake?

Thanks Tom. Going on the info in the carriage working schedule I have, the usual length is nine. I've got enough to do a pair of brakes and the two compos for now, plus shoving in a BR standard or two.

However, until someone does a fully accurate D2119 SK, I'm looking at using the official LMS diagram I have at my disposal and doing it myself..... I need loads! sad.gif

I'm always surprised seeing what you guys make out of those Airfix, Dapol and Replica donor models that I struggle to part with money for.

Another silk purse.

Well, for me, they're the cheap way of my doing a lot of stock, especially with the coupling system I use. Plus, the overall cost of doing a rake can be much reduced, if you shop around :). I'll be repainting some BR standards to match using my non maroon ones I still have kicking around..... A uniformly painted rake isn't what I want mind, just a whole mixture of subtly different shades should do it.

Now, I've since discovered something I'd completely overlooked. Seeing as this one is going to be part of the Manchester/Llandudno club train rake, it would have been a Cat.A maintained coach and thus carry a BR roundel under the middle window. Something I've never fully got to grips with to be honest! The whys and wherefores of the BR roundel and how it was applied...... huh.gif

Tim,

"until someone does a fully accurate D2119 SK"

What do you feel is wrong with the Comet version?

Alan

Hi Alan,

The unfortunate thing about the Comet version is that it doesn't cover the vast majority of the diagram. On those, the sliding window vents are the wider-spaced ones instead of the later version as per "porthole" stock. The other similar diagrams for the composite (D2117), brake second (D2123) and first (D2121) have the correct windows. It seems rather strange to be honest!

If the correct sides for that style were indeed available, then I wouldn't be having a moan ;). As far as I am aware, the former M&L (now 247) sides for the same diagram are identical to the Comet ones in having the same pattern of window vents. Pity really, as these coaches were quite numerous!

Cheers,

Hi Tim,

Are you sure? My Comet D2119 has "wide" vents (as in Plate 126 of "LMS Coaches" by Jenkins & Essery). If all else fails, I suspect Bill Bedford would do you a bespoke one with whatever windows you want. He did a D2161 for me with "wide" vents rather than his usual (and Comet's) "later" version. You would have to wait, of course!

Hi Alan,

Absolutely positive. The diagram (D2119) comprises pre and post-nationalisation build. Of those, the 316 built pre-48 have the wider vents, but the 385 built post-48 are the later style, hence the majority I mention above.

Going on that, I'm probably better off doing my own, instead of paying someone else to do my dirty work for me and possibly still not getting it "right". rolleyes.gif

One of those things really......

Sorry, Tim,

I misunderstood which group the word "those" referred to in your previous post.

M13167M looks really good. All the best with the rest of the rake.
